News: Security Flaw in HTC Smartphones Leaks Your Personal Data to Certain Android Apps

News: Security Flaw in HTC Smartphones Leaks Your Personal Data to Certain Android Apps
Have an HTC smartphone? Chances are that some of your stored personal data has been hijacked by malicious apps on your device. Android apps that have permission to access the Internet, which is pretty much every ad-supported app out there, can snag valuable information such as email addresses, location history, phone logs, text messages, and more. The problem child is a hidden app called HtcLoggers.apk, which can be found the EVO 3D, EVO 4G, Thunderbolt, and other HTC devices. It was possibly designed to be a troubleshooting aid for HTC, but that's not for sure. What is for sure is that it's capable of collecting all sorts of data from your device, and any app that has access to the web using android.permission.INTERNET can view it, as well as send the data off to a remote server for safekeeping. The kicker—passwords and logins are not needed.Artem Russakovskii, one of the researchers who uncovered this flaw, said, "It's like leaving your keys under the mat and expecting nobody who finds them to unlock the door." Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.Proof of the security flaw.
Unfortunately, you can't do anything about the security flaw except wait for HTC, but they claim to be working on the issue: "HTC takes our customers' security very seriously, and we are working to investigate this claim as quickly as possible. We will provide an update as soon as we're able to determine the accuracy of the claim and what steps, if any, need to be taken."But… if you have a rooted device, or don't mind rooting your device, you can simply remove the problematic HtcLoggers (you can find the file at /system/app/HtcLoggers.apk) and all will be good. If you'd prefer to stay un-rooted, then just beware of installing malicious apps until HTC issues some kind of fix.

How To: Use Your Back Button to Force-Close Any Android App on the Spot

How To: Use Your Back Button to Force-Close Any Android App on the Spot
If you've ever used a custom ROM on one of your devices, chances are it had a built-in feature that allowed you to kill any app by long-pressing the back button. This function comes in handy quite often, especially in situations where an app is acting up, since it stops all associated processes and clears the app from memory.Unfortunately, though, this feature is hardly ever present on stock firmware. So developer elesbb decided to create an app that will bring this functionality to almost any device or firmware, which means there's one less feature you'll have to miss about your old custom ROM. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
RequirementsRooted Android device "Unknown Sources" enabled

Step 1: Install 'Hold Back to Kill'To begin, point your device's web browser to this link. The APK installer file should begin downloading immediately, but wait until it has finished before moving on. Next, tap the "Download Complete" notification, then press "Install" on the following menu. When that's done, go ahead and tap "Open."

Step 2: Set the Timeout & Enable the Accessibility ServiceWhen you first launch the app, you'll be asked to set a timeout period for the long-press back to kill gesture. This is essentially the amount of time that you'll have to hold down your back button before an app will be killed.A value between 300 and 500 milliseconds should work for most folks, so enter your preferred number here, then tap the "Save And Close" button when you're done. At this point, you'll be taken to your phone's Accessibility menu. From here, select the "Hold Back to Kill" entry, then turn the service on and press "OK" on the popup.

Step 3: Perform the Gesture & Grant Superuser AccessThe first time you perform the long-press back to kill gesture, you'll be asked to grant the app Superuser access. This is a one-time thing, and in the future, the gesture will automatically kill the foreground app without any further interaction. So open any app, then press and hold your device's back button. When the Superuser request message comes up, tap "Grant" on the popup. From now on, any troublesome apps are only a long-press away from being killed. Do you mainly use this feature to prevent apps from running in the background, or do you only use it when an app is acting up? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Take Perfectly Straight & Level Photos with Your iPhone Every Single Time

You can easily level picture frames on your wall using your iPhone, but leveling the photos you actually take is a whole 'nother story. There are no built-in leveling tools in your stock Camera app, or in most camera apps for that matter. We did previously cover a cool app called Horizon that automatically leveled out your videos while you shot them, but it's not free and works best with videos, as you could probably guess. For photos, you'll want to use a a dedicated app called Orient - The Self Aligning Camera, developed by Ajit Katti, which uses the built-in gyroscope to keep photos aligned correctly. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Orient is simple and straightforward to use. Just open it up and take a photo vertically or horizontally. The camera interface has a basic layout with the shutter on the bottom, live filters available up top in a pull-down, and aspect ratio choices on the bottom right. In the settings, you can enable/disable High Quality and Auto Orient. Take a photo from any position and save directly to your gallery. Again, as said earlier, Orient used your built-in gyroscope to level out the photos you take, and it does it fairly well. As you can see, I was drastically slanting my phone in these photos to display how well it works. Also, all your selfies will now be perfectly straight and easy to view without tilting your head and getting neck cramps.

News: Try These 5 Hot New Snapchat Lenses Iron Man, iDubbz & More
In this week of Snapchat lenses, there was a significant increase in ones that involve Marvel superheroes (the Infinity War effect), as well as ones with YouTubers. Classic sitcoms will also always do well, as evidenced by some of my previous roundups. Overall, lenses are doing well and only continuing to grow.To open up a user-created Snapchat lens, simply scan a Snapcode or hit a link. And if you enjoy these lenses, send them to your friends so they can get in on the fun.Technically, everything here is a lens — as it was created in Snapchat's Lens Studio. However, some of them feel more like filters (static overlays) than lenses (AR-based 3D objects). If that's the case, I'll be sure to specify.Previous Week: Fortnite Victory, Apyr & More Snapchat Lenses

1. Iron ManMr. Stark, I don't feel so good. This lens by ApocSnap puts you in the shoes of Iron Man himself with a fairly realistic helmet. If you double-tap the screen to flip the camera view, you'll even get a cool little sequence with Jarvis.Unlock the Iron Man Lens on Snapchat right now

2. iDubbzOn May 13, iDubbz released a video where he stood in front of a green screen and said second-long quips for over six minutes, with the intention of people inserting him into memes. The fact that Dave G. made a lens (more of an overlay) shouldn't be a surprise. You can cycle through three of these phrases by swiping to the left while using the lens, audio included.Unlock the iDubbz lens on Snapchat right now

3. Dwight SchruteThis one would be higher if the execution was better. This lens by SVRF makes you look like Dwight Schrute (kind of) with a suit, glasses, and moppy haircut. The theme from The Office also plays, as some of Dwight's coworkers populate the background. If you keep the lens running long enough, there's even a fun Easter egg, which I won't spoil here.Unlock the Dwight lens on Snapchat right now

4. Throw UpSure, this lens by Ben is gross. But you know what? That's why I love it. Your face turns green, and you open up your mouth to blow chunks. Simple, disgusting fun.Unlock the Throw Up lens on Snapchat right now

5. AnxietyThis lens by Dave G. (on fire this week!) reminds me of when you're about to die in first person shooters, how everything slows down while you scramble to find cover. Either way, it's a really cool effect. Tap the screen to have it begin pulsating, where it'll do so every second or so. You can tap it again at any point to have it pulsate on command.Unlock the Anxiety lens on Snapchat right now Now that you have the lowdown on the hottest lenses, be sure to use them well. Review: Now You Can Relive the '00s with Crazy Taxi on Mobile for Free

Review: Now You Can Relive the '00s with Crazy Taxi on Mobile for Free
Crazy Taxi continues to be a favorite among gamers of all ages, from those who played the game in late-'90s arcades to those who discovered the game later on consoles. This weekend, Sega announced their mobile version of Crazy Taxi would now be available for free. What a time to be alive. So does the arcade classic still hold up in 2017? Let's find out.If you want to download the game before reading this review, you can install it from the iOS App Store for iPhone or Google Play Store for Android.

GameplayCrazy Taxi Classic plays and acts much like the original. Both arcade and original modes are here, giving the player options to play by arcade rules, or play in three, five, or ten-minute intervals. For complete beginners to the game (like myself), Crazy Taxi gives you a helpful instruction slideshow to get you acquainted with the controls. Not that there are many. Still, it's a useful way to pick up and play Crazy Taxi without being completely useless. For the uninitiated, Crazy Taxi has you play as one of four different cabbies. Your mission is to pick up passengers throughout the city and to take them to their various destinations, all while being mindful of the time limit. Along the way, you aim to make some extra money by performing combo moves and getting as close as possible to other cars. It's a simple game, but it can become very addicting.Arcade mode is where you should start. Original mode drops the player into a much larger map, where the guiding arrow becomes more of a distraction than a help. Arcade is a good way for beginners who don't know the map to get a grip on how to play.

ControlsBecause we're playing on mobile, Sega has included both touch controls and tilt controls. Usually, unless the game design is skewed one way or the other, this comes down to user preference. Personally, I stick to touch controls because I find most tilt controls to be too sensitive. While I feel Sega did a good job with the tilt controls here, I still feel like I have more control using the touch directions; I found myself crashing into walls way more often when steering my phone left and right. (Not to say that didn't happen with touch controls, too.) That's not to say tilt controls don't have their advantages here. I found that I had an easier time making some quick turns than I did when using the touch controls. For example, reversing becomes a lot easier with tilt controls. Maybe I'm taking my instincts from real-world driving into account, which doesn't translate to reversing with touch controls. Whatever the case, I got myself out of some sticky situations faster when tilting the phone. For the most part, however, I preferred touch controls.
iOS vs. AndroidThe iOS and Android versions play similarly. I played the game on an iPhone 7 and the Google Pixel and didn't notice many advantages of one over the other. Vibration works on both platforms, which is a cool feature missing from, say, a 3DS. I preferred the vibration on the iPhone to the Google Pixel, since the iPhone's vibration is a little more subtle than the Pixel's. Nothing game-changing, but I couldn't help but be a little distracted by the Pixel.

AdvertisementsNow, to address the elephant in the room. This game is now free, which means ads. And these ads don't seem to care much for subtleties. From the permanent ad-space on the main screen to timed popups throughout the game, the ads are pretty intrusive. Sega even thought ahead to those of us who play these kinds of games on Airplane mode in an effort to cut down on the ads. In order to play the free version of Crazy Taxi, you need to be connected to the internet at all times in order to play. A total bummer if you're trying to play in the subway, or, I don't know, on a freaking airplane. Better hope your flight has Wi-Fi. Luckily, there are no ads during the actual gameplay. This detail is crucial. Many "free" games put the ads at the top of your game, distracting the player from what's happening on screen. Crazy Taxi at least gives you the decency to spam you once your game has ended. That detail makes the ads somewhat bearable.Ads become particularly evident when playing the "Crazy Box" mode. Here, the game offers players short challenges that usually don't last longer than 15–30 seconds. The problem is that almost every time you finish or lose the challenge, you get slammed with a new ad. This ad-placement happens at the end of games in the arcade and original modes too, but because of how short these challenges are, you potentially see three to four ads a minute. I had a hard time gathering the patience to play more than three of these challenges before getting sick of the ads.
The Bottom LineIs the free game worth it? Absolutely. You get more than your fair share of fun before having to sit through 10–15 seconds of advertisements. That's worth the free game. Ads may damage the Crazy Box experience, but if you want to enjoy this feature fully, the full game is available as an in-app purchase for only $1.99 (iOS) or $3.99 (Android).Considering PS2 games retailed for $50 back in the early 2000s, $1.99 is kind of a steal. If you're like me and have some inexplicable aversion to purchasing mobile games, Crazy Taxi is perfectly playable without having to buy it.Gadget Hacks Score: 3/3 — Great game, worth a download! Ads can be annoying, but not as annoying as they are for other free games.Don't Miss: The 3 Best Gaming PhonesFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

Unsurprisingly, many celebrities' similar faces are people using their images and pretending to be them. Can someone call MTV's Catfish? The app's facial recognition technology works fairly well, although I definitely found that some of its suggestions are way off base. I'd say it's decent at what it does, so you could be successful in finding the Justin Bieber to your Selena Gomez or — to reference a couple that's still together — the Zayn Malik to your Gigi Hadid. Unfortunately, you can only view people's full profiles if you have the Pro Subscription. You can get a one week free trial, but after that you'll have to shell out $7.99 each month if you're dying to learn more about your dream date's lookalike. In an exclusive interview with Gadget Hacks, Dating AI founder Heath Ahrens told us what spawned the idea for the app.I've been working in this technology — facial tech and voice recognition tech — for a long time and basically … we have a bunch of guys in the office who were all single and they wanted to see if we could apply the technology to dating. They're sitting there swiping, and their thumbs are getting tired. They said 'It'd be great if I could see the girls I'm interested in and swipe no to those who aren't my type.' Everyone has a type.
— Heath AhrensRegarding users' responses to the app, Ahrens said everything has gone well so far.We pushed it out about two months ago without any sort of press. As of last week, we had 15,000 users and a lot of subscribers. The user response has been positive, and that goes for 15,000 people ... We're really happy with the response.
— Heath AhrensNow, you may be wondering how Dating AI got access to all of these people's profiles. Well, someone get some paper towels because I'm about to spill this tea.Dating AI isn't actually operating with the permission of the dating platforms its displaying users from. None of the people featured on Dating AI have consented to it. In fact, they may not even know the app exists.Dating AI scraped the API of popular dating platforms to get access to their users' profiles. Ahrens told Buzzfeed that he doesn't think this is a problem.Don't Miss: How to Reorder Profile & Reset Matches in TinderUnfortunately for Ahrens, Tinder and Plenty of Fish do. Tinder does not allow the automated scraping of its API and contacted Dating AI about this violation of its terms, and Plenty Of Fish is working to get Dating AI removed from the App Store. In response to this backlash, Ahrens explained to Gadget Hacks that not only is this response is to be expected, but that the responses from most dating platforms have been supportive. Most dating sites have been very positive about the app. If it's not controversial it's not interesting. There have been conversations with dating sites that are productive that weren't initially on-board ... we think everyone will be on-board. People are going on dating sites because they want to find somebody. If we help people find matches in a better way, the incumbent players in the space get scared … Naturally, they would like for us to disappear, but the ones that aren't top dog have been really trying to get us to add them. We can't work fast enough.
— Heath AhrensWe'll see if these issues with Tinder and Plenty of Fish get resolved, but for now, Dating AI is available for both Android and iOS users. Who knows, maybe you'll find the love of your life!As for Ahrens, he confessed to Gadget Hacks who he'd be searching for.Maybe Jessica Biel or a Scarlett Johannson.

How To: Root Almost Any Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge Without Tripping KNOX

How To: Root Almost Any Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge Without Tripping KNOX
Both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have had root methods available to them before the phones were even released, but the problem with these existing root methods is that they would trip the KNOX counter on your device.
Why Tripping KNOX Is Bad for Your PhoneTo give you a bit of background, KNOX is a security platform for Samsung devices which ensures that no modifications have been made to the system partition, and thus, no potential security vulnerabilities have been created by the user.In general, as soon as any system-level changes (such as enabling root access) are detected by KNOX, a hardware fuse is tripped. This fuse cannot be reset, so once it's been tripped, there's no turning back. This is why a tripped KNOX counter means your warranty is void, since there's no way of covering up the fact that you've modified your software. It also likely means that you won't be able to use Samsung Pay whenever that comes out, since the mobile payment service will probably call on KNOX to make sure that the initial security methods implemented by Samsung are still in place. So basically, you don't want to trip KNOX if you can avoid it.
How to Root Your S6 Without Tripping KNOXThanks to a new root utility called PingPong Root from developer idler1984, almost all variants of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge can now be rooted without tripping the KNOX counter. And yes, that even includes the AT&T and Verizon Wireless models, whose locked bootloaders have prevented other root methods from working.
Before You BeginAs a heads up, this method utilizes a kernel exploit, which means the loophole that it's using to root your device will probably be closed soon. For instance, with the Galaxy S5, a similar method called Towelroot came out, and within a couple of months, it had been entirely blocked by changes made in over-the-air updates. So if you want to root your AT&T or Verizon device, the time is now. And if you want to root without tripping KNOX, this is likely your one and only opportunity. If your device has received a firmware update at any point since early May 2015, this method may no longer work. That being said, there is no harm in trying PingPong—worst case, it won't work, but there will not be any adverse effects to your device. The lone drawback here is that once you're rooted, you won't be able to accept over-the-air updates. But manually updating is still possible without tripping the KNOX counter—you'd just need to download the newer stock firmware and sideload it with Odin. And if you want to stay rooted after updating with Odin, you'll have to wait until a pre-rooted build of the stock firmware is released by independent developers.Note that using Odin to flash stock firmware will never trip KNOX, but flashing modified or modified-stock firmware will likely blow the KNOX fuse.

Step 1: Make Sure Your Firmware Version Is SupportedPingPong Root is compatible with most variants of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, but only certain firmware versions are supported. To ensure that your firmware is capable of being rooted with this method, head to your phone's main Settings menu, then select "About device." From here, you're looking for the series of letters and numbers that are listed under the "Build number" entry. More specifically, take note of the characters that follow the first period in this entry. As you can see in the above screenshot, my build number is G925TUVU1AOCG.Now that you know your build number, look through the following list of supported firmwares to see if your phone is capable of using PingPong Root. If your build number is listed under the "download data" sections, your device is still supported, but an extra step will be needed later.Samsung Galaxy S6G9200ZCU1AOD5 G9200ZHU1AOD3 G9200ZHU1AOD9 G920R4TYU1AOD3 G920IDVU1AOD1 G920FXXU1AOCV G920PVPU1AOCF G920TUVU1AOCG G920VVRU1AOC3 G920FXXU1AOBN G920FXXU1AODG G9209KEU1AOCI G9209KEU1AODA G9208ZMU1AOD5 G9208ZMU1AOCI G920FXXU1AOD9 G920AUCU1AOCE G920FXXU1AODE G9200ZCU1AOD9 G920W8VLU1AOCG G920FXXU1AOD4 G920R4TYU1AOCB Builds listed below require you to download data (more on this later)G920FXXU1AOCY G920IDVU1AOC4 G920FXXU1AODI G9209KEU1AOD5 G920IDVU1AOBQ G9208ZTU1AOD9 G920FXXU1AOE3 Samsung Galaxy S6 EdgeG9250ZCU1AODC G925VVRU1AOC3 G925FXXU1AOD9 G925PVPU1AOCF G925FXXU1AOCV G925AUCU1AOCE G925TUVU1AOCG G925W8VLU1AOCG G925IDVU1AOD1 G925SKSU1AOD5 Builds listed below require you to download data (more on this later)G925FXXU1AOD4 G925R4TYU1AOD3 G925FXXU1AODG G925FXXU1AOCZ G925IDVU1AOD3 G925LKLU1AOD8 G925SKSU1AOD8 G925FXXU1AOE3 G925PVPU1AOE2 G925FXXU1AOD8 G9250ZTU1AODC G9208ZTU1AOCI If you do not see your build number listed, refer to the developer's thread, as new builds are being added to the support list.

Step 2: Install PingPongRoot & SuperSUIf your build number is listed above, you're ready to go. First up, you'll need to make sure your Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge is set up for sideloading apps. To do that, head to Settings, then "Lock screen and security," and make sure that the "Unknown sources" option is enabled. At this point, you're ready to install PingPong Root. Point your Galaxy S6's web browser to this link to download a copy of the APK installer file. When the file is saved to your device, tap the "Download complete" notification to launch it. From here, tap "Install," then you may receive a warning message that this app contains code that attempts to bypass Android security mechanisms. This is exactly how PingPong Root works, so it's nothing to be alarmed about. Just tick the box next to "I Understand," then press "Install Anyway" if you see this message. When that's finished, tap "Open," then after a few seconds, Android's installer interface should come up again. This time it's asking you to install SuperSU, which is a root management app from developer Chainfire. So tap "Install" again, and when that's finished, press "Done" to head back to PingPong Root.

Step 3: Root Your DeviceFrom PingPong Root's main menu, you'll find two buttons—"Get root!" and "Download Data." If your device's firmware was listed in the "download data" section in Step 1, you'll have to tap the "Download Data" button at this point, then wait for the app to download the additional data. Once you're ready to root your device, tap the "Get root!" button. From here, you'll see a message that tells you to "Please Wait!!"—take heed to this message and don't interact with your phone while the root process is running. After about 30 seconds, a message will appear informing you that the process was completed. At this point, reboot your phone as soon as possible.

Step 4: Update Your Superuser BinariesWhen you get back up, go ahead and open the SuperSU app that you'll now find in your app drawer. From here, you'll be informed that your Superuser binaries need to be updated, so tap "Continue" on this message. Next, SuperSU will ask how you'd like to update your binaries. Select the "Normal" option from this menu, then give it about 30 seconds to update your binaries. When the process has finished, tap "Reboot" on the confirmation dialog.

Step 5: Verify RootAfter rebooting the second time, your device should be fully rooted and your KNOX counter will not be tripped. If you'd like to verify that everything went off without a hitch, I'd recommend that you download an app called Root Checker, which is available on the Google Play Store for free. After installing Root Checker, simply launch the app, then press "Agree" and "Okay" on the two popups that follow. From here, you'll be taken to the app's main menu. Tap "Verify Root" to make sure that PingPong Root was successful. At this point, Root Checker will ask for Superuser access, so tap "Grant" on the popup. When that's finished, a message at the top of Root Checker should inform you that your device is properly rooted. If for some reason you are not rooted at this point, run PingPong Root again (beginning from Step 3), only this time, place your device into Airplane mode prior to starting.Once you're rooted, you can take advantage of several awesome mods that can customize your device like never before. Check out this guide if you're tired of the "S Finder" and "Quick Connect" buttons in your notification tray, or head to this tutorial to find out how to remove the annoying boot-up sound on your Galaxy S6. You can even install a custom recovery now, but be aware that this willtrip your KNOX counter. What are some of the first root mods you applied on your Galaxy S6? How To: Your One-Stop Guide to Secure, Encrypted Messaging

How To: Your One-Stop Guide to Secure, Encrypted Messaging
Now that smartphones have ensured that we're connected to the internet 24/7, online privacy has become more important than ever. With data-mining apps hoping to sell your information for targeted ads, and government agencies only one subpoena away from knowing every detail of your private life, encryption has become our last line of defense. It was recently revealed that iMessage, the iPhone's default messaging app, can send some bits of data to Apple, even though messages were previously thought to be fully encrypted. Other popular platforms have unforeseen security issues, too, so end-to-end encryption is only part of the story. But which encrypted messaging app is the most secure, and truly the most private? Below, we break down some of the most popular options available right now, and highlight their strengths and weaknesses. This list may expand as new companies integrate encryption in the near future. For an Up-to-Date Guide: Check Out the 4 Best Apps for Private, Encrypted Messaging on Android & iOS

WhatsApp Messenger WhatsApp has been a heavy favorite worldwide for its ease in sending and receiving instant messages, including audio, video, and documents. It currently boasts a user base of one billion, and had recently finished rolling out end-to-end encryption for everyone, and WhatsApp claims to not have access to these encrypted messages at all.Users on older versions of WhatsApp might not have encryption enabled, so make sure to always stay updated with the current version. If you want to verify that you have end-to-end encryption with another user, you can use a QR code and 60-digit passcode to do so.The drawbacks to this? The privacy is maintained only if the user endpoint devices in the chat are fully secure themselves, an issue that does plague some Android users. Users also have to ensure that they're running the latest updated version of the app, and that means you and the people you're communicating with.On top of that, WhatsApp recently reworded their privacy policy with some new terms and conditions indicating that the popular messaging platform will now share some data with Facebook, even if you're not registered with the social media site. Your conversations themselves are still off limits, but the new privacy policy is something you should be aware of nonetheless.WhatsApp for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch WhatsApp for Android WhatsApp for web

Signal Private Messenger Signal has been well received by those very sensitive to digital privacy issues, most notably by Edward Snowden himself. Created by Open Whisper Systems (who also lent assistance to WhatsApp in their implementation of end-to-end encryption), Signal offers private messaging and phone calls via their mobile and desktop apps, both of which were made available to the public after an invitation-only beta program earlier this year. What Signal offers is end-to-end encryption based on free- and open-source code, as well as added layers of security verification. The setup is easy and the layout offers large enough text within the interface. In order to contact someone through Signal, both parties need to have the app installed and then go through a security check involving correctly identifying random words to make sure you're connecting with the right person. At present, a major draw for Signal has been the full encryption of phone calls with no hitches.Like WhatsApp, they claim to have zero access to your messages.Signal for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Signal for Android Signal for desktop (via Chrome)

Viber The VoIP and instant messaging app Viber made the recently announced end-to-end encryption for all chat conversations whether they're group-based or one-on-one as well, as for all calls. This goes into effect immediately where Viber's developers are located in Belarus, Israel, Brazil, and Thailand, with a global rollout over the next few weeks. Users looking to take advantage would then need to update to the latest version of the app and then use a QR code to re-authenticate themselves. This latest move by Viber also includes a Hidden Chats feature that lets you protect certain chats with a four-digit PIN code. There is also a color-coded security system that users can utilize to verify how secure their chats are, which can come in handy given that Viber does support up to 200 users on a group chat conversation if needed. One feature that Viber hopes will attract more users is the enhanced delete feature which allows you to simply erase any evidence of a chat from your device and that of whoever else was on the chat with you. What could be tricky for those interested in the newest version of Viber? For starters, you do have to make sure you're upgraded to the latest version on your device, which could leave those with older operating systems and devices left out, including those on PCs, who'll need Windows 10. Another thing to take a wait and see about is the company's plan to introduce bots into the app as a way to expand its appeal to businesses and to incorporate other services like gaming.Viber for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Viber for Android Viber for Windows Viber for desktop

ChatSecure ChatSecure is another solid option here, as it provides Off-the-record (OTR) encryption for all messages, which is a top-notch security protocol designed by cryptographers Ian Goldberg and Nikita Borisov. ChatSecure is fully open-source, and the fact that it uses the OTR encryption standard means that it's cross-compatible with other OTR messaging clients.ChatSecure for iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch ChatSecure for Android

ProtonMail ProtonMail stands out as an ancestor of sorts when it comes to the wave of end-to-end encryption services that are being provided. Created by a group of scientists from MIT and CERN, ProtonMail offers end-to-end encryption of email and is highly dependent on the user to create and remember a password to gain access to them. Users can also send and receive emails to those not using ProtonMail and still enjoy the protection of the service by manual encryption. There's even an option to give your emails an expiration date before sending them out.ProtonMail may not be as attractive to users who want to apply end-to-end encryption across all their platforms, but it still is considered a good traditional system to communicate with full privacy and does allow for users to upgrade to a premium account which lets them use a custom domain.ProtonMail for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch ProtonMail for Android ProtonMail for web

Google Allo (Incognito Mode) On the surface, a messenger app with Google's new Assistant giving you tips and search results while you're carrying on a conversation might sound like the farthest thing from secure. However, Google kept privacy-focused users in mind while developing Allo, so full end-to-end encryption is possible here. For truly secure messaging, you'll simply need to start an "Incognito Mode" chat in Allo. Once you do that, your messages will be fully encrypted from the time they leave your phone until they arrive on the recipient's device. You'll lose out on some of the cooler features with Incognito Mode, but you can get those right back by opening a non-secure chat for more lighthearted conversations.Google Allo for iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch Google Allo for Android

Facebook Messenger (Secret Conversations) Similar to Allo, Facebook Messenger now supports a fully encrypted communication mode. By default, your conversations are only encrypted as the messages move from Facebook's servers to either person's device, so Zuckerberg & Co. have a chance to analyze texts along the way. However, using the new "Secret Conversations" feature, your messages will be 100% encrypted, and you can even opt to have the messages disappear from both devices after a period of time. Again, though, end-to-end encryption is only available when you start a "Secret Conversation."Facebook Messenger for iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch Facebook Messenger for Android

Threema Threema has gotten a little bit of buzz, mainly among those in its origin country of Switzerland. Its user base in comparison to the others listed here is small (at last report, 3.5 million), but what's drawn people to Threema is the company's policy on protecting your metadata as well as using on an open-source code based on the NaCI Library. Plus, there's end-to-end encryption for all message types.Threema also offers a unique user ID generated by the initial app launch, and the ability to verify other users by QR code as an added layer of protection. Users can't make phone calls, but they can send voicemails, texts, and multimedia files. The company has also made it possible for businesses to send messages to clients who have the app installed in a gateway system similar to SMS gateways.Threema for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Threema for Android Threema for Amazon Threema for Windows

LINE LINE, the communications app that got its start in Japan due to a natural disaster, has grown to be used by close to 400 million worldwide. LINE is unique because their end-to-end encryption is enabled within the "Letter Sealing" feature between users in all chat room messages. However, you need to activate this feature manually, and all parties in a conversation must enable this feature also for it to be truly private.Just like Viber, it also has a Hidden Chat feature, as well as a time-limited messaging feature. And LINE claims that "no LINE employee or third party, besides the chat participants themselves, will be able to view [messages]."LINE for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch LINE for Mac OS X LINE for Android LINE for BlackBerry LINE for Windows LINE for Chrome

Telegram Telegram has emerged as a hefty rival to WhatsApp, and has been working on improving their suite of offerings to users. Included among its newer features is a new video player for iOS users, as well as a revamped chat interface for Android users. The standout feature is centered on their "Secret Chats" end-to-end encryption which users can switch on. They can then verify each other's identity with visual-based keys. The encryption Telegram offers has gotten some dubious attention due to terror groups creating secure channels with it, but the company has been vigilant in eliminating those channels once detected by their personnel. Telegram also claims to be more secure than WhatsApp and LINE.Telegram for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Telegram for Android Telegram for Windows Phone Telegram for Firefox OS Telegram for desktop (Windows/Mac/Linux) Telegram for web Telegram for Chrome

Dust Dust is a fairly new entry to the encrypted messaging app game, and comes from business titan and digital maven Mark Cuban. What makes Dust unique is that messages sent through the app never come in contact with the company's servers. In addition, messages don't get stored on a user's device and once they're read, they vanish. That alone is mind-blowing.Dust, available for iOS and Android users, was crafted with the emphasis on communicating quickly without leaving a trace, and initial reactions have gotten great feedback. Cuban has stated that future plans for the app will include expansion to other sources and a version for the Web.Cyber Dust for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Cyber Dust for Android

Surespot Surespot is less known, but has been rising in usage due to its encryption based on a public-key cryptography system and reliance on 256 AES-GCM. It offers encrypted offline backup through iTunes and local storage on Android devices. Another intriguing feature is the ability to create and use multiple identities for business purposes or regular means.Surespot claims that their servers never see the private key, so they have no way of decrypting messages from their end. Your username is also not associated with an email or phone number, which gives you even more privacy. Unfortunately, this is also a bad thing, because your password for Surespot can never be recovered or reset.Surespot for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch Surespot for Android
Popular Apps Without End-to-End EncryptionThere are others that offer encryption, but not end-to-end. So if you're using these extensively, bear in mind the conditions each app has in terms of privacy.Google Hangouts: Like iMessage, all messages through this service are encrypted, even on their servers. But if legal authorities request it, Google can hand those messages over. Kik: Their messages aren't encrypted, but the company does ensure that they're erased from their servers once they're delivered to someone's device. Twitter: There's no end-to-end encryption when it comes to their direct messages, and they can be subject to review and seizure by law. Snapchat: Yes, snaps do get erased from their servers once their recipients open them up on their devices. However, those that don't get opened stay on the servers for 30 days and can be subject to review by legal authorities despite being encrypted. Skype: Their instant messages aren't encrypted and can be seized by the law if requested. WeChat: The messages aren't encrypted and can even be tracked via GPS according to some accounts.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Apps for Private, Encrypted Communications on Android & iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Hack Christmas Lights for Custom Holiday Lighting Patterns

How To: Hack Christmas Lights for Custom Holiday Lighting Patterns

General Electric isn't known for their Christmas lights, but maybe they should be, because their GE Color Effects are pretty awesome. Especially the LED Color Effects G-35 String sets.  And especially when someone named Darco hacks them.Darco, whose real name is Robert Sun Quattlebaum, reverse-engineered (i.e. hacked) his set of 50 lights to show his own lighting pattern.  And for all of you planning to decorate your house with holiday lighting, this is the only true way to have a unique display. Here's what Darco has to say about his hacked Christmas lights:

Hacking Christmas LightsThis string contains fifty "bulbs".  Each bulb contains a red, green, and blue LED—allowing for any color to be produced.  The biggest drawback is how you control them: there are 14 pre-set "programs" that you can select, and they are all pretty lame.  However, with a little reverse engineering and an Arduino (or any other microcontroller) they can be made into the coolest Christmas lights on the block.  If you buy several strings, you could easily make a large 2D LED array.  The possibilities are endless.  At $59.99USD for a string (A tad over $1 per node), these things are a steal for what you can do with them.I wanted to share my efforts so that other people can give this a try.  At the end of the post I have a link to the code I'm now using to drive my Christmas lights. Feel free to use it for your own hacking endeavors. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
So far I've reverse engineered both the radio protocol and the protocol used on the LED data bus.  Of the two, the LED data bus protocol is by far the most interesting.  So, that's where I'll start…

LED Data Bus ProtocolThere are three wires connecting all of the "bulbs" in the string: +5V, Data, and Ground, respectively.  The wire isn't really marked for polarity, but the order I mention is from looking at the wire going into the first bulb from the controller box with the bulb facing up.  I've labeled the wires in the following photo:Each bulb has an address numbering from zero to fourty-nine, with bulb zero being the bulb closest to the control box.The protocol on the data line is simple and self-clocked. Here are the low-level details:Idle bus state: LowStart Bit: High for 10µSeconds0 Bit: Low for 10µSeconds, High for 20µSeconds1 Bit: Low for 20µSeconds, High for 10µSecondsMinimum quiet-time between frames: 30µSecondsEach frame is 26 bits long and has the following format:Start bit6-Bit Bulb Address, MSB first8-Bit Brightness, MSB first4-Bit Blue, MSB first4-Bit Green, MSB first4-Bit Red, MSB firstFrom this we can see that we have a color depth of 12 bits.  Not terribly great, but this should still be plenty for our purposes.  What is interesting is the Brightness field.  This field acts a bit like a multiplier and enables smooth fade-ins and fade-outs. Bulb address 63 can be thought of as the "broadcast" bulb, except that it only changes the brightness level—the color fields are ignored. Bulb addresses 50-62 are ignored under normal circumstances. Each frame takes 820 µSeconds to transmit. Since there are 50 bulbs, that means that takes a minimum of 41 milliseconds to individually update every bulb. This gives us a maximum refresh rate of slightly more than 24Hz. Not bad.
Bulb EnumerationIt turns out that the data line is not a continuous wire of copper thru the whole string.  Each bulb contains a microcontroller with two data lines: one is an input, and one is an output. When the string first powers up, all bulbs are in the "enumerate" state.  When in this state, the first command received is used to tell the bulb what its address is.  Once the address is set, all subsequent commands are forwarded to the next bulb.  This process continues until all bulbs are enumerated and have an address.Normally, you would want to perform some sort of power-on enumeration which would give each lamp it's own address—but this isn't the only option.  The enumeration step allows you to assign any address to any bulb you want—including giving several bulbs the same address.  By giving several bulbs the same address, you can control several bulbs with a single command. There may possibly be a way to force all bulbs back into the enumeration state without power cycling.  If this turns out to be possible I'll update this page with the details.

News: 20 Unique Android Apps That Offer Incredible Functionality

News: 20 Unique Android Apps That Offer Incredible Functionality
There are over 1.6 million apps on the Google Play Store, which makes it the largest collection of mobile apps on the planet. However, a large portion of this total is occupied by apps with overlapping functions—think social media, news, weather, music players, and various other categories where developers compete against one another to garner the largest user base. Here at Gadget Hacks, we all have our favorite "category" apps like these, but what really gets us going is when we come across an app that does something truly unique. We've covered quite a few of these uncommon wares over the last year, so today, we'll be shining a well-deserved light on 20 apps we've found that stand alone for the functionality they offer.
1. KinScreenIf you've ever been jealous of the Samsung-exclusive feature that reads your eyes to make sure that the screen never turns off while you're actively using your phone, KinScreen offers a great alternative that should work with almost any phone. Instead of tracking your eyes, this app monitors sensors in your device to detect even the most subtle movements, ensuring that your screen doesn't turn off while you're holding your phone. More info here.
Install KinScreen for free on the Google Play Store
2. CaastMeThere are several apps that let you send links between your various devices, but these are generally platform-specific and require you to install software on all of your gadgets. CaastMe, on the other hand, uses QR technology to send the links, meaning you can share webpages from your Android device to any computer by just installing a single app. More info here.
Install CaastMe for free on the Google Play Store
3. TextStatsIn today's society, the text message is one of our main forms of communication. This is a relatively recent trend in the grand scheme of things, which ultimately means that our language could be evolving at a pace we've never seen before. If you'd like to learn more about how the text message is affecting your own lexicon, give TextStats a try. This unique app will diagnose all of your sent and received messages, then show you the most commonly used words in beautiful charts and graphs. More info here.
Install TextStats for free on the Google Play Store
4. Slipstream MusicEverybody has their own unique music tastes, so it's virtually impossible to make the entire party happy with a playlist drawing from one person's library. Instead of arguing over what song to play next, install Slipstream Music on each device, then everyone can contribute to the playlist by sharing their Android music library in a few simple taps. More info here.
Install Slipstream Music for free on the Google Play Store
5. Easy CopyFor the most part, when you copy text on your Android device, it's because you intend on pasting it into a different app. Rather than switching between apps to get the job done, you can use Easy Copy to send the copied text directly to the app or function that you're ultimately copying it for. More info here.
Install Easy Copy for free on the Google Play Store
6. Google Handwriting InputWay before we learned to use a keyboard proficiently, we were taught how to write with a pen and paper. For a lot of folks, this means handwriting will always be a more efficient method than the alternatives. Google Handwriting Input capitalizes on this concept by replacing your hunt-and-peck keyboard with a blank space that allows you to "type" with your own handwriting. More info here.
Install Google Handwriting Input for free on the Google Play Store
7. SMSmartBecause of the way cellular networks were launched, we get SMS and voice coverage almost everywhere, while mobile data coverage has far more dead zones. If you ever find yourself in an area without mobile internet coverage, SMSmart can potentially be a lifesaver. The app uses your near-ubiquitous SMS connection to transfer data, which means you can now use common internet services almost anywhere on the planet. More info here.
Install SMSmart for free on the Google Play Store
8. Backup MemoryIf you have a family member who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, it's a horrible realization to think that, one day, your loved one may not recognize your face. Research has shown that constant mental stimulation can help stave off this effect, so a team of Alzheimer's analysts got with Samsung to create Backup Memory, which provides gentle reminders of your shared memories whenever you and your loved one are near each other. More info here.
Install Backup Memory for free on the Google Play Store
9. A-BOTIf you're ever bored, lonely, or just want to chat, A-BOT has a virtual friend waiting for you 24/7. Once you've installed this chat app, you can choose from one of three bots who are programmed to answer your questions and provide witty or non-sequitur banter any time you need it. More info here.

10. AudioPocketMany folks use YouTube as their primary source of streaming music, but the tunes comes to a grinding halt as soon as you open any other app. While there have been root workarounds for this issue, AudioPocket allows non-rooted users to play YouTube music in the background with a unique and simple share intent mechanism. More info here.

11. AppChatWith AppChat, tech support has finally been crowd-sourced. Upon opening the app, you'll see a list of all of the other apps you have installed on your phone. Simply select any app you're having issues with, then you'll be greeted by a chat room of users who also have that app installed. More info here.

12. News DictionaryWhile browsing the internet or reading our favorite news feeds, we sometimes come across words we've never seen before. Rather than copying the word, then switching over to your Google app to search it in an online dictionary, an app called News Dictionary will let you get straight to the point. Simply highlight an unknown word, then press the copy button, and you'll instantly see the definition in a little pop-up window. More info here.
Install News Dictionary for free on the Google Play Store
13. Glimpse NotificationsFor most devices, when you get a new message or notification, your phone beeps and a tiny LED light starts blinking. This lets you know that a message has come in, but it doesn't give you any information about what the message is. With Glimpse Notifications installed on the other hand, your screen will wake for a brief moment when you get a new notification, allowing you to see the message sender and some of its contents before deciding if it's worth dealing with right now. More info here.
Install Glimpse Notifications for free on the Google Play Store
14. Microsoft HyperlapseThe tech giant behind Windows has created groundbreaking new software that will render time-lapse videos as silky and smooth as though they were taken with a professional steadycam. 15. Wake on GestureHow many times a day do you pick your phone up off your desk in order to check the time or see if you've got any new notifications? If you're like me, the answer is constantly. To make this habit a bit more simple (and downright cool), try Wake On Gesture, which lets you turn your display on and back off by simply waving your hand over your device. More info here.

16. Ported PS4 Remote PlaySony has an app for their Xperia smartphones that lets you stream your favorite PlayStation 4 games over to your handheld device. 17. Notify BetaAndroid's notifications have been revamped several times over the years, but Notify Beta will take them to a whole different level. Once you've got it set it up, all of your notifications will be colored to match the icon of their originating app, so it's a unique way to add a bit of personal flair to your device. More info here.

18. VysorIf you leave your phone plugged into your computer at your desk, a Chrome app called Vysor can literally give you a window into your Android device. As long as you've got ADB set up on your computer, you can simply launch Vysor at any time to completely control your phone from a window on your desktop. More info here.
Install Vysor for free on the Chrome Web Store
19. Instant Heart RateMany Samsung phones come with a built-in heart rate sensor, but essentially, all this is doing is shining a light through your finger, then recording the light that reflects back to get your heart rate reading. This same hardware functionality can be accomplished using the camera and LED flash on the back of any phone, and an app called Instant Heart Rate does this extremely well. After some testing, I found that this app gives readings that rival the purpose-built heart rate sensor in the Galaxy S6 in terms of accuracy, so it's a great way to measure your heart rate on a phone that doesn't have an actual heart rate sensor. More info here.
Install Instant Heart Rate for free on the Google Play Store
20. FiveWallpapersWouldn't it be nice if each of your home screen pages had a unique wallpaper? With an app called FiveWallpapers, this can easily be a reality. After choosing a wallpaper for each of your home screens, you'll get a fresh and personalized look every time you swipe over to a different page on your launcher. More info here.
