The Nexus 6 is one of the few devices on the market that sports a 1440p "QHD" display. This means that the amount of pixels displayed is higher than almost any other smartphone, which sounds great on the surface, but is not without its drawbacks.For one, most apps and games are still written with 1080p as their max resolution, since this is the standard amongst current generation devices. And even if an app or game does support 1440p resolution, the graphics processor on your device has to work overtime to track all of those extra pixels, resulting in diminished performance and battery life. None of this even touches on the fact that it's debatable whether or not the human eye can actually discern a difference between 1440p and 1080p at this display size and viewing distance.Don't Miss: 6 Easy Ways to Increase Battery Life on Android So, if you're fine with the standard "Full HD" resolution of 1080p, you stand to save some battery life and boost the performance of your Nexus 6. By lowering the resolution with a software mod, your GPU will have less work to do, and the difference will most likely not be noticeable to the naked eye.

Step 1: Install Terminal Emulator for AndroidThe bulk of this mod involves typing a few terminal commands. As such, you'll need a terminal emulator app, and one of the best options for Android is appropriately named Terminal Emulator for Android. Simply search that name on the Google Play Store to get the app installed, or head to this link.

Step 2: Execute the CommandsThe commands we'll be using today will need to be typed in accurately. If you'd like, you can copy each of them from this webpage, then paste them into the Terminal Emulator app on your phone.The first command is a simple one, just type:su Then hit the "Enter" button on your keyboard. This will make Terminal Emulator ask for Superuser access, so tap "Grant" on the popup that follows. This next command will change your display resolution to 1080p, but it will not change your device's DPI value. Because of this, the visual assets on your screen will temporarily appear larger than normal, but that will be fixed in short order. Type the following command, then hit the "Enter" key:wm size 1080x1920 Next, we'll adjust the DPI value to suit the new resolution. To return the visual assets to their normal size, type this command (followed by the "Enter" key):wm density 420 Most of the visual assets will return to their normal size at this point. But some, like the keyboard and on-screen buttons, will require a reboot. To take care of that, type the following command:stop && start When you hit "Enter" this time, your device will immediately reboot to reset the DPI for any stubborn apps and visual assets.

Step 3: Verify Your Display ResolutionWhen you get back up, your Nexus 6 should now be sporting a frugal resolution of 1080 by 1920. If you'd like to confirm this, head to the Play Store and search for an app called Display Tester. Install it, then open the app, and your display resolution will be listed right in the middle of the screen. Since the new resolution and the DPI value you've set up are proportionate to their stock numbers, everything should appear exactly the same as before. The only noticeable difference should be a gain in battery life and performance. (1) Stock 1440p Resolution, (2) 1080p Resolution If you decide you'd like to switch back to 1440p QHD, the process is the same, but the numbers you type into Terminal Emulator will be slightly different. News: 21 New Features in Android 8.1 for the Essential Phone

After testing a series of Android 8.0 builds, Essential hit the reset button and jumped to Android 8.1 Oreo. The beta program didn't last long, as Essential has now released the official 8.1 update to the masses. The features from the 8.0 betas are all still there, plus a few goodies specific to the updated version. We'll highlight the standouts here.Essential's reason for jumping to 8.1 was that 8.0 had several stability problems that they believed were addressed with the small update. So nothing major, but it's good that Andy Rubin & Co. are getting their flagship on the latest and greatest Android version this quickly. Alongside the update, Essential continues to address bugs and performance issues, including a fix for scrolling jitter and updated security patches.

1. New Settings Menu LayoutsThis update includes a new Settings layout. Gone is the hamburger menu that was introduced with Android 7.0 Nougat. Instead, each menu is compressed to better present the information that the user needs. While most of the changes are minor, a few menus have been revamped. For example, the Battery menu includes an icon reflecting current battery life, and screen-on-time is on the main menu as well.Another major redesign is Accessibility. The Downloaded Services section now shows an icon next to each eligible app. The addition of icons continues throughout the menu, helping users better identify each option.

2. Redesigned Navigation ButtonsThe navigation buttons have received a change in their design to help stress the Google Assistant. The back and recent apps buttons have been reduced in size in comparison to the home button. The home button received an additional circle providing more emphasis on the button, which brings up the Google Assistant when long-pressed.

3. Automatic Dark Mode for Quick SettingsNow, your Quick Settings pull-down menu will automatically change color based on your home screen background. Whenever you use a darker wallpaper, the Quick Settings will change the background color to black to match. However, for all other colors, the menu will display a white background instead.

4. Semi-Transparent Quick Settings MenuThe Quick Settings menu is also semi-transparent now, allowing users to somewhat see the previous screen. This feature is visible with either background color and offers a small change to the Quick Settings.

5. Battery Indicator for Bluetooth DevicesOne of the more exciting features introduced with Android 8.1 Oreo is a battery indicator for Bluetooth accessories. While this feature has been a part of iOS and select OEM skins for a while, stock Android was never able to effectively monitor the battery life of Bluetooth devices until now.In your Quick Settings, after connecting to a battery-powered Bluetooth device, a battery icon will appear to the right of the Bluetooth icon representing the battery life of the accessory. By selecting the text below (which displays the name of the connected device), you'll see a list of connected devices along with the battery percentage of each.

6. Hi-Fi Bluetooth CodecsWith so many phones removing the headphone jack lately (including the PH-1), Android has worked to improve the quality and experience of Bluetooth audio. There have been a number of Hi-Fi codecs created by companies before, however, only a select number of Android phones supported them. Now, this is no longer the case.With the update, Essential users can now enjoy Hi-Fi audio codecs such as aptX HD and LDAC, depending on which is used by your headphones. While not equivalent in sound to wired headphones, they do offer a better experience compared to devices which don't support the codecs.
7. Hide 'Running in the Background' NotificationOne of the few annoyances that came with Android 8.0 was a set of "Running in the Background" and "Drawing Over Other Apps" notifications. While their intent was to help protect users from battery consuming apps, the problem was when this was unnecessary.For example, my password manager remains active in the background so I can quickly enter and exit it throughout the day. With Android 8.0, I received a static notification informing me that it's "running in the background" and therefore consuming battery. Unlike other notifications, I couldn't dismiss this permanently. Unless I gave up the convenience of my password manager, I was forced to deal with this notification.Google heard the cries from the community and fixed this problem by building in the ability to stop this notification. 8. True Oreo Easter EggAs you may have noticed with previous Android 8.0 beta releases, Android Oreo didn't have a true easter egg. In past versions, by tapping the "Android Version" entry under "About Phone," you'd reveal an easter egg reflecting the dessert-based update. However, Android 8.0's "easter egg" was an underwhelming orange "O."Android 8.1 changes that, giving users the image they expected, Oreos. The popular snack cookie is now revealed with a bonus. After tapping and long-pressing on the Oreo logo, you reveal an Octopus in water which you can drag around the screen. What does an Octopus have to do with Oreos? Who knows, but is it cool? Absolutely!

9. Cheeseburger Emoji Is Now FixedThe great outcry of the Android 8.0 beta for Essential PH-1 users has been cheese on the Cheeseburger emoji. No longer is the cheeseburger disrespected by placing the cheese underneath the patty. With 8.1, Essential fixed this by placing the cheese on the top as it always should have been. Life is complete now.

10. Dynamic Calendar and Clock IconsWhile this feature is limited to Essential's default launcher, the clock and calendar icons will adjust depending on the time and day. Instead of the default 31st on the calendar app, the icon will now alter based on the actual day of the month, while the clock will show the current time. It a small change, but one that's definitely appreciated.

11. New Power MenuWith Android 8.1 Oreo, the power menu has been altered, with one of the more noticeable changes being its reduced size. 12. Music NotificationAnother aesthetic change introduced with Android Oreo is the new music playback controls in the notification shade. The colors change based on the cover art of the song playing. Each element will attempt to match the cover art's color scheme, creating an eye-catching notification that is easy to identify in a crowded notification shade.

13. Picture-in-Picture Mode for NetflixProbably one of the biggest front-end changes in Android 8.0 was the inclusion of picture-in-picture mode. While watching a video or receiving turn-by-turn directions, you could reduce the content to a small floating window by just pressing the home button.While this feature is still present, Netflix is now among the supported apps in in Essential's Android 8.1 update. Netflix decided that it wouldn't support PiP mode without the absolute latest version of Android. Fortunately, with the latest build, Essential users don't have to worry. 14. New EmojisWith Android 8.1, Essential has added the full Emoji 5.0 list. With this update comes 70 new emojis along with skin tones for human emojis. Some standout additions include Face Vomiting, Star-Struck, and Breastfeeding. Some of the new emojis included with the Oreo update.

15. Snooze Individual NotificationsAdditional notification controls are present in 8.1. Essential users can temporarily dismiss an individual notification, which will return at a later time. The length of the snooze can be altered, allowing users to control when they want to deal with certain notifications.

16. Fingerprint Scanner GesturesNo longer do Essential users need third-party apps to use fingerprint scanner gestures. Built into Android 8.1 is the ability to swipe down for notifications. Especially for those with smaller hands, this feature makes using the PH-1's 5.7" display much more manageable.Additionally, third-party app developers can now use an API to monitor the fingerprint scanner for swipes (both vertical and horizontal) to create even more gestures.

17. Notification ChannelsUsing a system called Notification Channels, apps can now put their notifications into different categories. This will let you control the visibility and urgency of different types of notifications that come from the same app.Each Channel can be modified with several tools. The priority, whether it makes a sound, whether or not it vibrates, if it displays as an icon badge, whether it shows in the lock screen, and if it overrides do not disturb mode. This feature is particularly useful for email clients, as it lets you set different notification importance for your various inboxes if the app supports it.

18. Google Play Protect & Other Security MeasuresAfter years of dealing with malware on the Play Store, Google created a new service that will automatically scan apps for any form of malicious code, including malware. This system is called Play Protect, and it even works for apps you sideload. Play Protect is now fully operational in the 8.1 update.Unknown Sources also operates differently. Unlike previous versions where permission to sideload apps was given to all applications when enabled, Android Oreo now requires permission to be granted on a per-app basis. This prevents malicious app from downloading malware onto your device without your permission. Android Oreo also includes "Rollback Protection" in its Verified Boot system. This prevents you from manually re-flashing Nougat on your PH-1 after updating to Oreo, but it's not as bad as it sounds. In the past, if someone were to get access to your phone, they could theoretically flash Nougat and run exploits to bypass your lock screen that have since been patched in Oreo. Now, that's no longer possible.

19. Revamped File ManagerThe default File Manager received a new look in Oreo. While it is still limited to the Downloads folder and certain types of media, it is still a formidable choice for those who don't use (or need) a full-featured manager such as FX File Manager. One useful feature is its ability to access your cloud storage, Google Drive. 20. Autofill Your PasswordsUnlike previous versions of Android which required workarounds, Android Oreo allows Essential users to autofill their login information into an app. By default, this feature uses passwords from your Google account, but all the major password managers currently support the new API. With this new feature, setting up your new Essential is much easier. 21. Control How Apps Use the Notch AreaWith the most recent build of Oreo (OPM1.180104.141), Essential users can now control how apps are displayed in landscape. Now that's a different story.The team at Mygo Software has come up with an app that will allow you to log into any website with a single tap. It does this by recording you performing the login process once, then repeating the exact set of taps and presses to skip right past the entire login process in the future. Step 1: Install LoginBoxThe app that will make logging into any website easier than it's ever been is called LoginBox, and it's available for free on the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Set a Master PasswordSince the LoginBox app houses the passwords you've stored in it, you would be well-served to password-protect the app itself. To do this, tap the Settings icon near the top-left of the LoginBox home screen, then choose Set Password. Next, tap Turn passcode on, then enter in a 4-digit PIN to protect any future passwords that you store in the app.

Step 3: Record the Login ProcessLoginBox only requires you to login to your favorite websites once. While you're doing that, the app will record your actions and save them to be "played back" later.As such, you'll need to log into the website you're adding one last time. From the app's home screen, tap the Plus icon near the top-right, then enter in the address of the site that you'd like to have one-tap login for. At this point, the app will let you know that it's about to record the actions you perform on the next screen. Simply login as you normally would, including pressing the Login button on your chosen website. When you've successfully logged in, tap the Stop button at the top-right of the screen and select Save from the following menu. You can even go a step further if you want, and proceed to tap links within the site—the app will record all of your actions up until you press the stop button (even after you log in).

Step 4: Log in with LoginBoxThe next time you'd like to log into this website, simply open LoginBox and tap the corresponding entry for the website in question. All of the actions that you recorded in the previous step will be repeated automatically, and you can go about using the website through the LoginBox browser. The app uses Android's native WebView rendering engine to display webpages, so the experience will be virtually identical to using the mobile version of the Chrome web browser.This will definitely come in handy for me, since the login process for my banking website is particularly convoluted. And while this problem can hit Apple Maps like other navigation apps out there, there are a number of fixes you can try to get navigation audio working again.A number of factors can cause voice navigation prompts within Apple Maps to malfunction. They can range from overlooking a simple setting to an iOS update that went awry. Unfortunately, there's no one-size-fits-all solution to getting this feature working again in Apple Maps. 1. Check Your Volume LevelFirst, make sure that your iPhone isn't set to the lowest volume. You can't silence Apple Maps navigation completely using the volume buttons — even if the Ring/Silent switch is set to mute — but it could be too low for you to hear. To check, press the Volume Up button on your iPhone to crank the audio up.

2. Turn Up the Volume Within Apple Maps SpecificallyIf the above trick didn't work, you may have to go into the Settings app within your iPhone to check the default volume settings for Apple Maps. So open Settings, select "Maps," then tap on "Driving & Navigation." Next, make sure Navigation Voice Volume isn't set to "No Voice." Pause Spoken Media During Navigation PromptsAlternatively, if you prefer listening to podcasts or audiobooks over listening to music, you may not be hearing the Apple Maps navigation prompts correctly. Again, open Settings, select "Maps," then tap on "Driving & Navigation." Next, make sure "Pause Spoken Audio" is checked under Navigation Voice Volume so you can clearly hear directions. Check Your ConnectionsIf you still can't hear voice navigation prompts in Apple Maps, it doesn't hurt to double-check to see if your iPhone is properly paired with your car or truck, especially if you rely on Bluetooth not only for your vehicle's audio but also for headphones and other gadgets. Obviously, you won't be able to hear voice navigation, along with other media on your car's speakers, if your iPhone is connected to your headphones.So manage your connections by opening the Settings app on your iPhone and tapping on "Bluetooth" to see which device your iPhone is currently paired with. From there, select your car's Bluetooth connection from the list of available devices if it already isn't paired with it. On the other side of the coin, check your vehicle's Bluetooth to ensure that it's connected to your iPhone and not to any other saved devices. Of course, you'll also want to make sure that you automobile's audio volume is set accordingly for you to properly hear voice navigation prompts.

5. Force-Close Apple MapsIf you've tried the tips mentioned above but you're still not getting any voice prompts on Apple Maps, the app might have encountered some issues that's preventing it from dictating turn-by-turn directions. In this case, try force closing Apple Maps, along with any other running apps for good measure, and see if this solves the problem.Force closing apps is a simple procedure, and basically entails either double-pressing the Home button (iPhone 8 and below) or swiping up from the bottom and pausing in the middle of the screen (iPhone X). This then reveals all the apps that are currently running.Tap on the target app and swipe up to close it (iPhone 8 and below) or long-press on it then swipe up or hit the (–) button (iPhone X). 6. Clear Your Device's RAMAs an extra precaution, you may want to try clearing the RAM on your iPhone. If an app is really acting up, force-closing the app might not be enough. While it looks like the app is closed, it could still be running in the background. The process is different depending on if you have an iPhone X or iPhone 8 and older models, so check out those links to see how it's done on your respective model.

7. Force-Restart Your DeviceIf restarting Apple Maps and clearing RAM didn't do the trick, you'll need to have to take it up a notch and force-restart your iPhone to see if it solves the problem. Performing a hard reboot on an iPhone is a great way to solve software issues like unresponsive and buggy apps, so if you've tried all the tips above and still aren't getting voice navigation on Apple Maps, this trick is worth a shot.Either simultaneously press and hold on the Home and Side buttons (iPhone 6s and below), Volume Down and Side buttons (iPhone 7 series), or quickly press on the Volume Up button, followed by the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Side button (iPhone 8 series and iPhone X). 8. Reinstall Apple MapsThe ability to remove built-in apps was impossible until iOS 10, so if your iPhone is running on at least that firmware version on up, this tip may prove useful. Uninstalling Apple Maps works exactly the same way as removing any other app, so perform a tap-and-hold on the app until it starts vibrating, tap on the (X) button that appears, then confirm its removal by tapping "Delete" on the prompt.Once Apple Maps is deleted, head over to the iOS App Store and reinstall Apple Maps from there. 9. If All Else Fails ...If you've tried all the tips listed above, and still have no audio prompts to dictate directions on Apple Maps, it maybe time to restore — or update — your iPhone back to factory settings to get the feature to work again on the app. Though you can restore or update your device over the air through your cellular or Wi-Fi connection, we recommend doing this through your PC or laptop using iTunes for more reliable installation.So open iTunes on your computer, making sure that it's updated to the latest version. From there, connect your iPhone to your computer, and back up your device through iCloud or iTunes itself to help prevent data loss. Click on "Restore iPhone" after backing up your iPhone, and iTunes will take care of the rest. Once you've reactivated your iPhone, don't open Apple Maps just yet. Go into the app's settings within the Settings app first, and make sure that the proper settings are enabled as highlighted on the second and third tips listed above. Open Apple Maps once you're done, and enter navigation mode to see if voice navigation now functions as it should.Which tip worked for you? Even if you trust your friends to the end of the earth, a super secure password can be a pain to share with them, especially if it's just a bunch of random characters.If you don't like the idea of writing down your password for guests or typing it in for them, Eve Marie over on Tixeertne has a creative solution for easily sharing it—a custom printed QR code that friends and family can scan on their smartphone or tablet.

How to Create a Custom QR Code for Your Wi-Fi PasswordThere are tons of QR code generators out there. Eve Marie used QRStuff.com, but I'll be using Unitag for an example because it offers more customization options. Creating the code is simple. All you have to do is choose which type of code you want and input the information. Unitag also lets you customize the color and shape of your code, even down to the shape of the eyes.

Step 1: Select Wireless Network or Plain TextThere's an option called Wireless Network that lets you generate a code that automatically connects the person to your Wi-Fi. It only works with Android, though, so if you have friends with iPhones, you'll have to make a plain text one with just the password.

Step 2: Enter in Your Network InfoOnce you choose your code type, enter the information you want it to contain. For the Wireless Network type, you'll need to type the SSID (network name), password, and tell it whether you have WEP, WPA/WPA2, or an open network. For Plain Text, just type in your WiFi password.

Step 3: Customize Your QR CodeNow you can customize the look of your code. You can choose from several different templates, change the colors, and even add an image or logo to the center of the code.

Step 4: Print & DisplayOnce you're finished, you can share it or download it to your computer so you can print it out. You don't have to be as fancy as Eve and frame it, but displaying it in a common area will make it much easier for guests to connect to your network.
Step 5: Scan to ConnectIf you made the Wireless Network version that only works with Android, all they have to do is scan it using the "Scan" function in their Wi-Fi settings to connect, or use a free QR reader like Barcode Scanner. For iPhones, they can scan the Plain Text version that only contains the password when they're asked to enter it.
