How To: Make a Working Speaker Using Only a Magnet, Wire, and Masking Tape

How To: Make a Working Speaker Using Only a Magnet, Wire, and Masking Tape

Duct tape is the king of all household items. You can use duct tape for practically anything, like this sweet wallet. But duct tape isn't the only crafty tape out there; masking tape holds its own, too.You may already know that you can make homemade speakers using an inflated balloon, as well as paper plates, but you can also whip out the masking tape for some nice DIY sounds. And that's exactly what Instructables user Peris The Majestic did.All he used for this homemade speaker was a magnet, copper wire, a stereo cable, and some masking tape. He says it's duct tape, but it's actually masking tape, though, it's possible duct tape could work also. Image via instructables.com First he made the the masking tape surface. He cut five pieces of tape (sticky side up) and placed them together. You could make yours bigger of course. Image via instructables.com Once the surface is complete, you can the add the copper wire. Peris decided to make an outline of what the copper wire would look like before sticking it to the masking tape. Image via instructables.com You may not have to do this step, but it's good to visualize the outcome before you start placing the wire. Remember, the more copper you can fit on the masking tape the better the audio signal should be.So, place the wire in a tight of coils as you can make them and it should look something like this. Image via instructables.com You will need to tape down the final coil with a thin piece of tape. Now we can move on the stereo cable. You can buy a stereo cable from any electronic store or you can use an old pair of headphones like he did. You'll have to cut the wire to a reasonable length, leaving the jack and removing the headphone part. Then remove some of the rubber to reveal the wiring. Image via instructables.com Twist the corresponding ends together and use a lighter to burn of the access enamel insulation. Image via instructables.com Burn the ends of the copper wiring as well, and then connect the stereo wires to the "speaker" wires. Image via instructables.com Now plug the jack into an audio source. Here is where the magnet comes in. Use the magnet to amplify the sound. The closer you place the magnet to the copper wiring, the louder the sound will be. Depending on your device, when you lower your brightness slider all the way to the minimum, it may still emit a considerable amount of light. This is because manufacturers have the option of setting a minimum brightness value, and while 1 would be the true minimum brightness that your display is capable of, some have set is as high as 5 or even 10.

How To: Turn Your HTC One into a Portable N64 Gaming System

How To: Turn Your HTC One into a Portable N64 Gaming System
My favorite type of video game is first-person shooters, and the one that started it all for me was GoldenEye 007. There was just something about the controls, fast-paced action, and free-roaming environment that got me hooked.Unfortunately, I'd have to dust off my old Nintendo 64 to relive the fun again, and I like my N64 in the attic where it is. I've got enough gaming systems clogging my entertainment console as it is.That's where the HTC One comes in—you can play all of your N64 favorites right on your Android device wherever you go, no bulky video game console required. We just need to get our game ROMs and an emulator that will play them. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install an EmulatorTo start, you'll need to download a Nintendo 64 emulator to play N64 game ROMs on your HTC One. There are many available in the Google Play Store, but I recommend the free SuperN64 by Marcos Santiago. Image via wonderhowto.com The application is ad-free, but there is a nag screen telling you to rate the app in the Play Store.
Step 2: Get Some N64 Game ROMsNow, you'll need some N64 game ROMs on your device to use with the emulator, as it does not come with any. If you're hardcore, you can always make your own ROMs based on the N64 cartridges you have, but it's much easier to just find the ROMs already made online somewhere.Just do a quick Google Search for the game of your choice and download it. SuperN64 supports ROMs with file types like .v64, .z64, and even .zip files, so just make sure they end in one of those. Keep in mind, for legal reasons, you should own a physical copy of the game before downloading it.

Step 3: Copy ROMs to Your PhoneOnce you find your N64 games, you can either download them directly to the internal storage of your HTC One and rearrange them with a file manager app, or download them onto your computer and copy them over to your phone. I recommend the latter, because it's much easier to keep them all in one tidy place.Create a folder on the root of your internal storage. I just named mine ROMs. Image via wonderhowto.com Create a folder inside of the ROM folder called N64 and copy the downloaded ROMs into that folder. Image via wonderhowto.com That's it. Pretty simple, and a lot better than using a file manager on your device to organize them.

Step 4: Load Up a GameWith your HTC One disconnected from your PC, open up SuperN64 to load the games. It should automatically find your ROMs on your storage and list them all. To play one, just tap Choose Game and tap the game of your choice.

Step 5: Play & Have Fun!Playing the N64 on the HTC One can be difficult at times due to the arrangement of the SuperN64 controller on the screen and the amount of buttons. You may want to check out an external controller solution such as the POWER A MOGA, which works great as a full-size controller over Bluetooth. When you tap the screen, you will see the menu bar up top which allows you to change the emulation speed, save and load game states, and access the settings. The application automatically saves your spot on exit or close of the ROM which is a really nice feature. Image via wonderhowto.com
Final ThoughtsOverall, the Nintendo 64 experience is a really good one using SuperN64. Games are fluid and I've experienced no lag. If you miss playing N64 games, I suggest you check out SuperN64.

As the HTC One is a popular Android device, there are lots of custom ROMs available, but the custom ROMs for HTC One mentioned above should help you narrow down your search. Make sure that you install the ROM that best fits your needs and feel free to shoot any questions below.

How To: Improve Battery Life on Your iPhone Running iOS 12

How To: Improve Battery Life on Your iPhone Running iOS 12
Performance and stability improvements, as well as new features, are just some reasons to install iOS 12, but new changes mean new battery health challenges. It can be difficult to boost battery life while taking advantage of everything this update has to offer. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to avoid unnecessary battery drain when using iOS 12 on your iPhone. While many of the following tips involve being smart with certain settings and features you have control over, it's not all on your shoulders; Apple knows you worry about your iPhone's battery life throughout the day, and they have included new solutions in their latest iOS update to help maximum time between charges. All those tips and more are included in our list below.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know About

1. Listen to Your iPhone's AdviceIn the "Battery" section of the Settings, you'll find Insights & Suggestions. This area will provide tips on how to cut down on battery usage, tailored to your specific needs. For example, if iOS detects your iPhone is using high brightness, it might suggest you dim your display to save on battery power. It's a helpful feature that feels more personal than generic battery-saving advice.More Info: Using iOS 12's New Insights & Suggestions for Improved Battery Life

2. Keep Track of Your Usage with New ChartsIOS 12 introduces new tools to keep your battery usage in check. Fresh this year are charts that detail both your battery usage as well as your battery activity over 24-hour and 10-day periods of time. Here, you can get a sense for how often you use your iPhone and how that impacts your overall battery life over time. Tap anywhere on either chart to get a more detailed view of your battery data. For example, the 24-hour battery level chart will show you increments of 15 minutes in any given area you tap, while the 10-day battery usage chart will show you one day's data at a time.More Info: How to Make Use of iOS 12's New Battery Charts for iPhone

3. View Battery Usage by AppIf the new charts aren't specific enough for your taste, try Battery Usage by App at the bottom of the "Battery" page. Here, iOS 12 lists all of your used apps, accompanied by both time and battery percentage used by each over either 24-hour or 10-day period. These lists are sorted by usage, so you quickly see which of your apps is using the most of your battery. Perhaps it will encourage you to use high-powered apps less, or, if rarely-used apps make the list, dive into their settings and reduce their use.More Info: Everything You Need to Know About iOS 12's New Battery Stats

4. Use Dark Mode in Apps When PossibleSome third-party apps have a dark theme built in since iOS doesn't have one itself. This tip is mainly for iPhones with an OLED screen, such as the iPhone X. These types of screens will display nothing in place of black colors, so if an app is using black as its background, your display is using a lot less juice.YouTube has a dark mode, while others like Instagram only have one if you're jailbroken. For apps that don't have a built-in dark mode, such as iOS Settings, you can use Apple's "Smart Invert" feature to swap whites for blacks.More Info: How to Unlock the New 'Dark Mode' in iOS 11 & Higher
5. Use Audio Only for Group FaceTime Calls (Coming Later)Group FaceTime lets you chat with up to 31 other people at once. While Apple has worked out a great system for keeping 32 faces on-screen at the same time, you don't need to show yours to participate. IOS 12 lets you join a group call with only your voice, even if other users on the call are using video. That way, your camera can stay off, and you can save a little battery while you talk.More Info: How to Use FaceTime's Group Chat on Your iPhone
6. Disable Dynamic WallpapersAs cool as some of Apple's "Dynamic Wallpapers" are in iOS, they can really eat up some battery. Unlike the 3D Touch wallpapers, these ones animate all the time in the background, so it's better to avoid using them. You can change the background for your lock screen or home screen from "Wallpapers" in Settings.

7. Disable Unnecessary NotificationsOne of iOS 12's most anticipated features is the fine-tuned notification system. That being said, unnecessary notifications only serve to annoy you and to use up your iPhone's precious battery. If you find yourself receiving notifications you don't want or need, pop the notification with 3D Touch. Then, tap the ellipsis (•••) on the window, select "Turn Off..." then "Turn Off All Notifications."More Info: How to Quickly Change Notification Settings for Any App in iOS 12 Images by Justin Meyers/Gadget Hacks Alternatively, take a dive into your Settings app, tap "Notifications," then select the app in question. Make sure "Allow Notifications" is disabled to block the app from sending you further alerts.

8. Turn Off Siri SuggestionsSiri Suggestions have only gotten more useful under iOS 12. That being said, the feature can still use more battery than its worth. If you think the extra battery life is worth losing Suggestions over, you can disable them in Search, Look Up, or on the Lock Screen, as well as for individual apps. Just head to "Siri & Search" in Settings, and decide for yourself what needs to be enabled as well as what doesn't.
9. Avoid Using Animoji & Memoji (iPhone X Only)While iOS 12's Memojis are a fun take on Animoji introduced with the iPhone X, these animated avatars don't come without cost — it takes extra battery power to render and map either the emojis or personalized Memoji onto your face, especially with the new tongue and wink detection shipping with iOS 12. If you want to make your iPhone's battery last, avoid using Animoji to communicate on-the-go.Don't Miss How to Create Personal Memoji on the iPhone X

10. Disable Background App RefreshBackground app refresh is a great tool to keep your apps up to date and active while you focus on other things. However, background activity is a battery-drainer. While useful, battery-conscious users will want this feature disabled. To shut it off, head over to "General" in Settings, then "Background App Refresh." Tap "Background App Refresh" at the top of the page, and ensure "Off" is selected.

11. Disable Cellular Data While on Wi-FiWi-Fi is how we stay under our monthly cellular data limits. Because you don't need to use cellular data when connected to Wi-Fi, there's really no reason to force your iPhone to waste battery as it constantly searches for a cellular connection. You can quickly disable cellular data via the Control Center, and enable it just as fast when leaving Wi-Fi.More Info: How to Disable Cellular Data & Other Settings in Control Center Secondly, you can disable cellular data via the Settings app. Go to "Cellular," then ensure "Cellular Data" is disabled. Additionally, you can disable cellular data for specific apps, if you find you'd like one or two apps connected to cellular anyway.

12. Disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth & AirDropIf you depend on Wi-Fi, wear an Apple Watch, and need to share files to a coworker via AirDrop, you'll need all three of these connections enabled on your iPhone to keep your life moving. However, if one, two, or three of these do not apply to you at any given time, it's best to disable them, as your iPhone uses battery life searching for a point of connection for each.Disabling each connection type is simple; For Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, just jump into the Settings, tap "Bluetooth" or "Wi-Fi," and disable the appropriate feature or features. AirDrop can be quickly disabled from Control Center; Swipe up from the bottom of the display, open the connectivity pane, then tap "AirDrop." When prompted, tap "Receiving Off to disconnect. Tapping either the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi icons here will not disable those items, however.More Info: What All the Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Symbols Mean in Control Center

13. Set Your Flashlight to the Lowest BrightnessIf you're like me, you probably rely on your iPhone's flashlight quite often. While it's tempting to keep the flashlight set to the brightest setting, it can be unnecessary in many situations since the lowest brightness gets the job done and saves battery.Just open Control Center and 3D Touch or long-press on the flashlight button. Select the lowest brightness setting, and iOS 12 will remember your choice the next time you turn on the flashlight.More Info: How to Change Flashlight Brightness on Your iPhone

14. Enable Wi-Fi AssistWi-Fi assist helps you avoid subtle battery drain in areas of weak Wi-Fi connection. If the Wi-Fi is too slow for a proper connection, the iPhone automatically switches to a cellular connection, speeding up your internet use but also relieving pressure on the battery. You won't be able to take advantage of this is cellular data is disabled, however, so keep that in mind when choosing your battery-saving techniques. To make sure Wi-Fi assist is enabled, open Settings, tap "Cellular," then scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to find the "Wi-Fi Assist" slider. Make sure it's on.

15. Disable WidgetsIf you take advantage of the convenience of widgets in iOS, this one might be a tough tip to hear. However, widgets can cause battery drain, especially those which use location services, such as Maps or Weather. To disable widgets, swipe right on the Today View to enter the widget window. Scroll to the bottom of the page, tap "Edit," then tap the red minus next to any Widget you'd like to remove. The good news? Restoring any of these widgets is as easy as scrolling to the bottom of this page and tapping the green plus next to the widget in question.

16. Turn on Low Power ModeWho doesn't love Low Power Mode? The feature disables a suite of features that add stress on your iPhone's battery, some of which you can't disable yourself. While iOS only prompts you to enable the setting once your iPhone's battery reaches 20 percent (and then ten percent), you can manually enable it at any time to give your battery a boost.Enabling Low Power Mode is as easy as saying "Hey, Siri — enable Low Power Mode." You can also type the request to Siri, or long-press the Home or Side button and ask the assistant that way. Alternatively, you can jump into the "Battery" section of the Settings app or use the button in the Control Center to enable "Low Power Mode" yourself.
17. Keep Your iPhone Face-DownThere are two kinds of people in this world — those that place their iPhones face down on a table and those that place them face up. If you belong to the former, you now have evidence to your method's superiority. When face down, your iPhone's display won't activate on its own when receiving notifications. You'll still hear alerts, but the display won't turn on, saving battery life without having to think about it. If you crave visual notifications, you could enable LED alerts, but the battery trade-off might not be worth it.

18. Disable 'Hey Siri'We love "Hey Siri" since the feature comes in handy for more than one tip on this list. That being said, it requires your iPhone to be on guard at all times, listening for your voice commands 24/7. That kind of surveillance doesn't come for free and will take a toll on your iPhone's daily battery life. To quickly disable "Hey Siri," go to "Siri & Search" in Settings, then disable "Listen for 'Hey Siri'."

19. Turn Off Auto-Playing Videos in AppsAuto-playing videos in apps like Facebook and Twitter can be convenient, but let's face it — if you want to watch a video, it's not a big deal to just tap the play button. In most cases, this feature is just a weight on your battery. Consider disabling the feature in apps that use it.While the setting won't be found in the same place in all apps, here are two examples to get you started:To disable auto-playing videos in Facebook, tap the hamburger menu in the bottom right, tap "Settings & Privacy" at the bottom of the list, then tap "Settings." Select "Videos and Photos" towards the bottom of the page, then tap "Autoplay." Select "Never Autoplay Videos," and you'll be all set. In Twitter, tap your profile icon, then tap "Settings and privacy." Select "Data usage," then in "Video autoplay," tap "Never."

20. Enable Reduce MotionPart of iOS' charm is in its subtle visual effects, like animations when launching apps, and the parallax effects seen on the home screen. However, all of these motions have a negative effect on your battery life. To disable them, head to "General" in Settings, tap "Accessibility," then "Reduce Motion." Enable it.

21. Enable Location Services Only for Some AppsLocation services are some of the worst culprits when it comes to battery drain. The problem? They're pretty much necessary to use a modern smartphone. Unless you don't mind total disconnection, some location services will need to remain enabled. The good news is you can be smart about which apps you give location permissions to, as well as when those apps have access to your location. In "Location Services" found in the "Privacy" menu in Settings, you'll find all the apps on your phone that request access to your location. You can blanket-disable all at the top of the display, but again, this will most likely be impractical. You're better off going through apps one by one and deciding for yourself. For each, choose from "Never," "While Using the App," or "Always" depending on how you feel you need the app you use your location.

22. Turn Off Auto-BrightnessAuto-Brightness in iOS can help make sure the iPhone display is always legible based on the ambient surroundings. If it's dark, the screen brightness will be reduced to prevent eye strain. Likewise, if it's sunny out, it'll max out so you can actually see the screen. However, if you're anywhere in between dark and bright locations, Auto-Brightness will work too hard and will provide clumsy results anyway. In truth, the setting just wastes battery life when compared to manually controlling it. Head over to "Accessibility" in the "General" settings, tap "Display Accommodations," then disable Auto-Brightness.More Info: How to Turn Your iPhone's Auto-Brightness Off

23. Turn Off 'Raise to Wake'This iOS feature is convenient, but requires extra battery life to keep your iPhone's sensors active at all times. To disable it, head over to "Display & Brightness" in Settings, then make sure the toggle next to "Raise to Wake" is turned off.More Info: How to Stop Your iPhone's Screen From Randomly Turning On

24. Disable iCloud When PossibleICloud is a great tool, especially for users with more than one iOS device. However, if your iPhone is your only iCloud-enabled tool, you might not care about connecting iCloud to certain apps and services. If that's the case, disabling iCloud for those services can save some battery, as your iPhone isn't constantly attempting to upload data to the cloud.

25. Fetch Data Less Frequently (Or Not at All)If your iPhone is set to "Fetch" email data more frequently, that's more battery drain for you. If you don't mind receiving email alerts less frequently, head to "Passwords & Accounts" in Settings, tap "Fetch New Data," then select the least frequent timeframe you can. For maximum battery-saving, choose "Manually" so you'll only receive email data when you check for it.

26. Don't Send Data to AppleSending data to Apple is helpful to the company for developing future iterations of iOS. However, all that communications unbeknownst to you can use up your battery. To give both your battery and your privacy a break, open "Privacy" in Settings, tap "Analytics," then turn off "Share iPhone Analytics." Apple Watch owners will see this setting as "Share iPhone & Watch Analytics."

27. Disable Significant LocationsPreviously called "Frequent Locations," Significant Locations records the places you visit most to provide better location services in certain apps. Disabling this setting eliminates battery-draining location recording you probably didn't even know was going on in the first place. Just head to "Locations Services" in your "Privacy" settings, tap "System Services," then "Significant Locations." Authenticate yourself, then disable the feature.

28. Disable Suggested Apps for Lock Screen & App SwitcherDo you often see an app icon in the bottom right of the lock screen or below your app windows when accessing the app switcher? Those are iOS Suggested Apps, which try to help you out by "guessing" what app would serve you best based on your location. If that doesn't concern you, and you'd rather save the battery life, head to"Location Services" in your "Privacy" settings, tap "System Services" again, then disable "Location-Based Suggestions."

29. Turn Off Most (If Not All) These Location SettingsAs you can see from the "System Services" page, there are a number of services that use your location data, draining your iPhone on a daily basis. You most likely can do without many of these settings, so turn them off. To get you started, try disabling "Emergency SOS," "Location-Based Alerts," "Location-Based Apple Ads," "Share My Location," "iPhone Analytics," "Popular Near Me," and maybe even "Improve Maps."

30. Turn on 'Limit Ad Tracking'Why not try enabling a setting for a change? "Limit Ad Tracking" blocks location-based ad trackers as much as possible, saving you battery life. Head over to "Advertising" in your "Privacy" settings, then enable "Limit Ad Tracking."

31. Turn Off Fitness TrackingFitness Tracking uses your iPhone to track your movement throughout the day. While useful, the setting uses battery you might not need. If you have a Fitbit or another fitness tracker, you won't need the additional data from your iPhone. To disable Fitness Tracking, head to "Motion & Fitness" in your "Privacy" settings, then simply deactivate "Fitness Tracking."

32. Turn Off HandoffHandoff is great when using the same app between iOS devices or Macs. If you only have an iPhone or you don't work across devices, this feature won't be of use to you, but it could still hurt your daily battery life. Turn it off from your "General" settings.

33. Disable Certain App Store SettingsIf you download an app on another iOS device, it can be useful to have that app appear on your iPhone without thinking about it. However, when you're low on battery life, that feature might do more harm than good. If you feel it's worth manually downloading your shared apps, you'll be able to save a little battery life.Go to "iTunes & App Stores" in Settings, then disable "Apps." You might want to turn off "Updates" as well, especially if you have a lot of apps on your iPhone, and "Use Cellular Data" if you decide to keep "Music" and "Books & Audiobooks" on since Wi-Fi will use less power.
34. Remove Network Extenders or Signal BoostersIf you have crappy reception at home or in your office, you may have purchased a network extender or a signal booster to get some better coverage for calls and data. Well, as much as they things can help with your cellular reception, they can really drain the battery in your iPhone. We recommended avoiding these products unless you're plugged in and charging at the same time.
35. Try a Charging Case OutIf the above tips haven't helped out much, you go the other route and look at third-party options such as battery boosters. For those of you who don't mind bulky cases, you can get an iPhone case with a built-in battery that charges your iPhone while you're out and about. When you go to charge your iPhone next, you'll also charge the battery pack case. If you don't want the extra bulk, you can just carry around small battery pack for emergency charges.Don't Miss: 9 Ways iOS 12 Makes the iPhone X Even BetterFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Save Battery Life by Activating Doze Mode Faster on Android Marshmallow

How To: Save Battery Life by Activating Doze Mode Faster on Android Marshmallow
Of all the new features in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, an automatic battery-saving function called "Doze" might just be the most interesting. What it all boils down to is that if you set your phone down on a flat surface, the device uses internal sensors to detect that it's motionless and not in use, then responds by drastically scaling back battery-sucking services until the next time you pick your phone up.It's definitely a cool feature and all, and it has greatly improved standby time on every Marshmallow device we've tested so far. But it does take a while to kick in, sometimes requiring as much as an hour of laying flat and motionless before anything happens. Wouldn't it be even better if you could just have Doze take over as soon as you turned your screen off?Oasis Feng, developer of the popular battery-saving app Greenify, thought the same thing. As a result of his work, you can now make Doze kick in as soon as you turn your screen off and lay your phone down—and the best part is, you don't even have to be rooted to do it.
RequirementsDevice running Android 6.0 or higher Computer and USB data cable (non-rooted users only)

Step 1: Join the Greenify Beta ProgramThe new Greenify feature that enables Doze as soon as you turn your screen off is only available in the beta version of the app. So to begin, head to the following link from your Android device, then tap the "Become a Tester" button.Sign up for Greenify Beta Next, either tap the link on the beta signup page that says "download it on Google Play," or use this link to head to Greenify's download page. From here, either install the app if you haven't done so already, or update the app if you already have it installed to make sure you're running the latest beta version of Greenify.

Step 2: Enable 'Aggressive Doze' (Non-Rooted Users Only)If your device is rooted, you can skip this step. Otherwise, for the non-rooted users, you'll have to execute a one-time command through ADB.So make sure you've gone through the process of setting up ADB on your computer, and enabling USB debugging on your phone, then connect the two devices using a USB data cable. From here, enter the following command to make sure your phone is connected properly:adb devicesIf that returns a series of letters and numbers, you're good to go. So enter the following command to enable Greenify's new "Aggressive Doze" feature on your non-rooted device:adb -d shell pm grant com.oasisfeng.greenify android.permission.DUMP For more information and troubleshooting tips on this part of the process, see the developer's guide for enabling Aggressive Doze on non-rooted devices.

Step 3: Turn 'Aggressive Doze' On in GreenifyNow you're ready to enable the "Aggressive Doze" feature in Greenify, which will cause your phone to enter battery-saving Doze mode as soon as you turn your screen off.So to wrap things up, tap the three-dot menu button on Greenify's main menu, then select the "Experimental features" option. From here, simply tick the box next to the "Aggressive Doze" option, and you'll be all set. From now on, your phone will enter Doze mode immediately after you turn your screen off and lay your device down on a flat surface. If you'd like to verify this, head to the battery menu in Settings, and any flat lines you see on the graph will indicate the times that your phone was in Doze mode. How much battery life have you saved by enabling Greenify's Aggressive Doze mode? How To: Extend Your iPhone's Battery Life by 3 Hours Using Low Power Mode in iOS 9

How To: Extend Your iPhone's Battery Life by 3 Hours Using Low Power Mode in iOS 9

One thing Apple users universally complain about is battery life, whether it's on an iPad, iPhone, or Apple Watch. Apple did include a Battery Usage feature in iOS 8 to help us monitor which apps suck up the most energy, but it's too big a pain to deal with. Now, in iOS 9, there gave us something that actually matters—Low Power Mode.According to Apple, the new Low Power mode disables background features not needed for basic functionality, and in turn, provide up to 3 more hours of battery life. If that's true, it'll be a damn-impressive feat.Don't Miss: The Coolest iOS 9 Features You Didn't Know About Don't Miss: How the New One-Tap App Switcher Works
To add the claimed three hours of battery life, you'll need to enable the power-saving feature, which exists inside of your Settings app. You'll now see a new option called Battery, which houses the Low Power Mode option, as well as stats for Usage and Standby power.Once on, the Low Power Mode will disable the Mail app from fetching new emails, apps from refreshing in the background, motion effects, and animated wallpapers. You'll know Low Power Mode is on because the battery icon on your device will change color from black to yellow. On Apple's iOS 9 preview page, they also mention other ways they've improved battery life by making "the entire operating system, apps and key technologies" more efficient. One such feature uses the ambient light and proximity sensors so that your screen stays off when your iPhone is face down on a table, regardless of the notification.Apple claims that iOS 9 adds an hour of additional battery life, just on its own, without Low Power Mode enabled, which is great news for those of us whose iPhones can't even last an entire day without multiple charges.Theoretically speaking, iOS 9 can extend your battery life by four hours, but I'm skeptical because all of that additional battery life can exist only under certain ideal conditions (on Wi-Fi, not on a phone call, with many services disabled).Follow Apple Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Apple tips.

News: Apple's Ditching the 'Do Not Track' Option for Safari in iOS 12.2

News: Apple's Ditching the 'Do Not Track' Option for Safari in iOS 12.2

Apple first added the "Do Not Track" option to Safari in iOS 7, which sent a request to site owners and advertisers to not track your browsing activity. By tracking your activity, those third-parties could tailor content to you that you're more likely to interact with. While the feature was always opt-in, it's no longer a feature at all in iOS 12.2 on your iPhone.Release notes for Safari 12.1, the app version that is included in iOS 12.2, clearly state that "Do Not Track" has been removed from Safari's settings. The reasoning is because the standard is expired, therefore serves no purpose but to allow third-parties to fingerprint your device and use information.Removed support for the expired Do Not Track standard to prevent potential use as a fingerprinting variable.Do Not Track's usefulness entirely depended on the third-parties that it was sending the signal to since it was not a mandatory request. Web apps, advertising networks, analytics companies, plug-in providers, and other parties hiding on the web could easily ignore the signal sent by Safari to not track your browsing activity, and it was easy for them since there was no universally-agreed upon DNT standard. Google, Facebook, and Twitter have all been known to ignore DNT requests.Don't Miss: New iOS 12.2 Features for iPhone You Don't Want to Miss Since the Do Not Track request header has been largely ignored by most websites, and because of its seldom deployment, the World Wide Web Consortium, the main international standards for the web, withdrew further consideration for the standardization of the tracking-protection expression in January 2019. The Safari settings in iOS 12.1.3 (left) vs. iOS 12.2 (right). While it's sad to see this feature go, it was never really more than the equivalent to a "Protected by ADT" sign on the lawn of your house. Yes, robbers and trespassers would see, but if there's something they really want in your home, they're going to try and get it. The only difference is, acquiring your browsing activity is not illegal.Plus, Apple had already implemented "Intelligent Tracking Prevention" in iOS 11 and higher, which put restrictions on how third-parties can use first-party cookies, effectively limiting the use of cross-site scripting when browsing the web. Safari 12.1's release notes also mention a few more Safari-related updates, which improves the overall performances of Intelligent Tracking Prevention.Removed support for partitioned cookies for domains with cross-site tracking capabilities. The Storage Access API now provides third-party access to cookies. Improved Intelligent Tracking Prevention to limit long-term tracking based on client-side first-party cookies and to verify partitioned cache entries.Don't Miss: 30 Privacy & Security Settings in iOS 12 You Should Check Right NowFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

Image via Bumble Already, The Hive has a lot going on. Events they have lined up include talks and panels on relationships and female entrepreneurship, a Q&A with Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe, a style session hosted by Drybar, and a Mentor and Mingle panel with Forbes. Even if you're not going to go for the opportunity to meet someone, these event are set to provide a lot of helpful tips and interesting talks with major influencers. Additionally, the space has included a coffee shop and a liquor bar for a more comfortable, casual experience overall.Currently, The Hive is only set to last a month, now through June 25, but if the lounge does well enough, it could potentially have an extension or even expand. How To: See Who's Using Your Wi-Fi & Boot Them Off with Your Android

How To: See Who's Using Your Wi-Fi & Boot Them Off with Your Android
Let's say you gave your Wi-Fi password to your neighbor a while back, under the assumption that they'd only use it while they were at your house sharing stuff via Chromecast. But now, your connection is slower than it normally should be, and you have this sneaking suspicion that the dude in apartment 3C is flat-out piggybacking off of your home network.Wouldn't it be great if you could easily see exactly who is connected to your Wi-Fi network, then selectively kick devices off of your router without having to log into your router and play with confusing settings? Well, that's exactly what a new Android app from the Pixel Group development team will do for you, and it makes things incredibly simple. This would also serve as a great way to temporarily boot your kids off of Wi-Fi when they won't come downstairs for dinner, and it works well as a general network diagnostics tool, too. Really, it's almost a must-have app for rooted users, so I'll show you how it works below.Don't Miss: Make Your Android Automatically Switch to the Strongest Wi-Fi Network
Requirementrooted Android device Android 4.0.3 and up

Step 1: Install Pixel NetCutThe app that'll let you kick people off of your Wi-Fi network is called Pixel NetCut WiFi Analyzer, and it's available for free on the Google Play Store. So to start, go ahead and get it installed.Install Pixel NetCut WiFi Analyzer for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Grant Root & Scan Your NetworkOpen the app, then tap "Grant" on the Superuser access request. From here, you'll be taken to Pixel NetCut's main menu, where you should tap "Scan" to see all devices that are connected to your Wi-Fi network. Note that your Android device will have to be connected to the Wi-Fi network that you want to analyze, of course.

Step 3: See Who's Using Your Wi-Fi & Boot Them OffOnce the scan is complete, you'll see a list of all the devices that are connected to your Wi-Fi router, complete with IP and MAC addresses. If you're not sure which device is which, you can select any entry from this list, then you'll see the device's manufacturer. Once you've sorted out the devices, you can even tap the pencil-shaped edit button to give each listing a nickname. Then, you'll also notice a set of green switches next to each device in the list—this is how you can boot them off of your router. Just toggle any switch to the off position, then that device will no longer be able to connect to the internet using your Wi-Fi—simple and straightforward, you gotta love that. Pixel NetCut also has a few useful network diagnostic tools. For instance, when you select a device from the list, you can see any ports that it has reserved, as well as ping and latency times. Overall, it's a great utility with several solid capabilities.Don't Miss: How to See Passwords for Wi-Fi Networks You've Connected Your Android Device ToFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: iOS 8's Hidden Gallery Shows Every Pic, Video, & Attachment from Your Texting History

Viewing all of the attachments in a message thread within iOS 7 has never been particularly easy. To see every single picture and video dating back to the beginning of the conversation, you have to manually scroll through the entire conversation and refresh it until all of it appears on your screen. Depending on how long the conversation is, that could take some time.Thankfully, iOS 8 now makes it easy to view all of the attachments sent from you and friends. Directly from the thread that you want to view attachments for, tap on Details in the top right. Here you'll find info about your contact, share location options, notifications toggle, and lastly, Attachments. Instead of swiping up through your extensive conversation, you can now view all of the attachments ever sent between you and the other person(s)—whether it be pictures, videos, or audio attachments. In order to save a picture, you can do it individually by holding down on it, tapping on More..., and then checking all of the images you want to save. After you've got everything checked, just hit the Save # Images link in the bottom left. Note that if you're only saving videos, it'll say "Save # Videos," and if you mix and match filetypes, it'll say "Save # Attachments" instead. It's these little improvements that make you wonder why they weren't available in the first place, especially when backing up media from Messages in iOS 7 was such a pain. But better late than never, as the say.

How To: Watch Apple's WWDC 2019 Keynote on Any Device

How To: Watch Apple's WWDC 2019 Keynote on Any Device
Apple had its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 3, 2019, which showcased big software announcements for all of Apple's hardware, and anyone can watch the keynote as it happened.WWDC 2019's biggest attraction is iOS 13, which was rumored to include a real dark mode, an enhanced Mail app, and glide typing, to name just a few features, but we also got a first look at macOS 10.15, tvOS 13, and watchOS 6. If you want to see the event as it unfolded in real time in June, which took place in San Jose, California, you can watch the keynote from any computer or smartphone.First of all, events like this can take a big bite out of your day. WWDCs have been known to run for two hours or longer, with this one being just over two hours, so make sure to plan accordingly. Apple uploaded the keynote to YouTube, embedded below, so you can watch directly from here. The video is also available on Apple's website.Don't Miss: All the Features We Wanted in iOS 13 for iPhone
Apple started the presentation at 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT) on Monday, June 3, 2019, and hosted a lucky audience at the McEnery Convention Center. Apple CEO Tim Cook, of course, took the stage, as well as others, most notably, the senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi.
Official Requirements for Livestreaming WWDC 2019Note: these instructions only apply when Apple livestreams events. To watch the keynote right now, view the YouTube video above or watch it on Apple's site. When an event is livestreamed on Apple's site, you needed the following setups:iPad, iPhone, iPod touch using Safari on iOS 10 or later iPad, iPhone, iPod touch running the WWDC app on iOS 12.0 or later Mac using Safari on macOS Sierra 10.12 or later PC using Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 Apple TV (fourth/fifth gen.) using the updated Apple Events app or WWDC app Apple TV (second/third gen.) from the Apple Events channel The above platforms are what Apple clarified as the "best" way to experience the stream. However, things aren't as rigid as they once were. You can watch live events in recent versions of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, so long as those versions support MSE (Media Service Extensions), in addition to H.264 (video) and AAC (audio). If you're running another web browser that meets these qualifications, it should play the stream as well.AirPlaying the live presentation to an Apple TV (second gen. or later) is also an option. You need the latest tvOS version, as well as the most recent iOS or macOS version.
Where to Watch the Keynote PresentationNote: these instructions only apply when Apple livestreams events. To watch the keynote right now, view the YouTube video above or watch it on Apple's site.If you're trying to watch a livestreamed event on your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Apple TV, the WWDC or Apple Events app may be the best way to go. If you're in front of a computer or don't want to install those apps on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, click the link below to launch the stream in Safari or another compatible browser.apple.com/apple-events/livestream
How Android Users Can WatchNote: these instructions only apply when Apple livestreams events. To watch the keynote right now, view the YouTube video above or watch it on Apple's site. While Apple doesn't denote a method for Android users to watch live events, you can follow the rule of the thumb for web browsers mentioned above. If you're using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, you'll be good to go, as these apps support MSE, H.264, and AAC. Again, if you're using another web browser, it should work so long as it supports these formats.Kindle users should find their Amazon Fire tablet supports the stream as well, on popular web browsers. You can also copy and paste the video feed directly into an app like VLC for Android or VLC for Fire. However, you shouldn't need to do this, as most browsers nowadays support the proper livestream formats.
Missed It? Don't WorryIf you don't want to watch a video livestream for whatever reason, you won't miss out. Apple will release a podcast version of live events which you can play in the Apple Podcasts app. The company also will keep a version of it in its Apple Events webpage for at least a couple years. And there is always the YouTube video embedded above. We'll be covering a lot of the new features in iOS 13, so if that's what you care about, stay tuned to our iOS 13 collection for tips and news on the next big operating system for iPhone.Don't Miss: Everything We Know About the iPhone XI & XI Max So FarFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Share a Netflix Video You're About to Watch to Your Instagram Story So Friends Can Watch with You

How To: Share a Netflix Video You're About to Watch to Your Instagram Story So Friends Can Watch with You

For me, there's nothing better than popping on a favorite show or new movie after a long day at the office — except when there's a friend or two I can talk to about that crazy ending. Netflix doesn't double as a social media app, so you can't chat about what you're watching there. What you can do is share your latest obsession to your Instagram story, to get the discussion going with all your followers.Netflix does a good job in this space. In fact, you can share any film or show to more than just your Instagram story — you can send anything on Netflix to other social channels such as your Snapchat story or WhatsApp. After sharing, others can enjoy and chat about the same Netflix content you're viewing.More Info: Share Netflix Shows & Movies to Your Snapchat Story To start, in the iOS app, open up the main page for the show or movie you want to share but stop right there — we know you want to hit "Play" and watch a little, or all, of your selection before sharing it — but the only place you can share this content is from this main page itself. Now, tap the "Share" icon below that "Play" button, then tap "Instagram Stories" from the list. (Netflix is working on an Android version of this but it's not out yet.) If this is your first time sharing to Instagram, you might need to accept a pop-up from Netflix giving the app permission to open Instagram on your behalf. Once in Instagram, you'll find that Netflix has booted up story mode, with either a preview image of your shared selection in the middle of the display or a full-screen image taking up the entire story, depending on the title you chose. If you get the preview image, feel free to resize it, and move it anywhere you'd like. In addition, you'll find all the traditional story tools you'd expect from Instagram, like text, stickers, GIFs, drawing, and more.Don't Miss: How to Add Animated GIFs to Your Stories Once you share your story, followers will be able to not only enjoy your entertaining Instagram content but also directly launch your shared show or movie in their own Netflix app. All they have to do is tap "View on Netflix," and their Instagram app will shoot them over to their Netflix app, directly to that show or movie's main page — whether or not they use an iPhone or Android device. If they don't have Instagram, this link will open the main page for the title as a webpage. News: Verizon's New 'Brandware' Is Terrible for Consumers, but Even Worse for the Android Platform

News: Verizon's New 'Brandware' Is Terrible for Consumers, but Even Worse for the Android Platform
Verizon Wireless executives recently cooked up a plan so devious that it could have only come from one of the four major US carriers. Apparently, they aren't satisfied with simply loading every Android device they sell with their own bloatware, so now they're reaching out to big brands to see who would be the highest bidder for a spot on your home screen.Imagine purchasing a brand new $700 smartphone, eagerly unboxing it, then being greeted by apps that only exist to serve as advertisements—things like Coca-Cola Freestyle and Pepsi Pass. No brand participants have been announced yet, but Verizon's hoping big companies will pay them $1 to $2 per phone to have their apps pre-installed on your next device.Don't Miss: Fight Back by Taking Advantage of These Carrier Freebies

Brandware Made Possible by Android's OpennessYou can't really fault Verizon here—after all, if a conglomerate isn't nickel-and-diming you, what else would they do? If this brandware plan works as intended, they stand to make billions of dollars, and that's the ultimate goal in the game of capitalism.Truth be told, most of the blame lies on Android's open-source code base. Unlike iOS, carriers can freely access and modify the Android operating system, which is how concepts like bloatware and brandware exist in the first place. Conceptual render of the 2017 Verizon Droid SuperMaxx Turbo HD's home screen. Specific brands that are participating in the program haven't been announced yet, so this mock up is pure conjecture at this point. With Android, carriers can simply dump a bunch of apps onto the system partition while they are installing the stock firmware on your device. Once files are on this partition, they can't be removed without Superuser access, so you can't uninstall them unless you go through the risky process of rooting your brand-new phone. On the bright side, Verizon's brandware plan won't dump these apps into the system partition, so you should be able to uninstall them without rooting.Ironically enough, Google's own latest anti-bloatware approach may be to blame for this. With Android Marshmallow, Google introduced a new "vendor" partition as a compromise to allow manufacturer and carrier tinkering but also satisfy the customer. This partition can be used to house all of the bloatware apps that a carrier could dream of, but the end user would at least be able to uninstall them.Don't Miss: Why Manufacturers Need to Stop Messing with AndroidThinking that carriers wouldn't use this new vendor partition if it meant their bloatware apps could be uninstalled, Google came up with a compromise: To install apps here, the carrier wouldn't have to do any tinkering with the phone beforehand, and instead, Android would automatically download the apps for them while the user completed initial setup.Well, this tactic worked, apparently, as Verizon would be using this exact process to install their brandware partner apps. We don't know much else about how the program will work—or which brands will take Verizon up on their offer. It's a pretty nice deal, though, since it would get them millions of additional downloads in the Google Play Store. The true irony of this whole idea is that the very thing that draws people to Android—its openness and customization—simultaneously is what sticks these annoying forced ads and carrier apps onto your phone. With a controlled and restrictive system like Apple's iOS, none of this is possible. But the next time you walk into your local carrier store, don't be surprised if someone tries to fold you up and stick you in their wallet. It's becoming clear that Verizon sees Android users as human-shaped, walking dollar signs.Don't Miss: The Ultimate Guide to Deleting Apps & Bloatware on AndroidFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+
