How To: Facebook Better Using Google Chrome

How To: Facebook Better Using Google Chrome
With over a billion monthly active users, it seems that Facebook is nowhere close to being dethroned as the most popular social media service in the world (sorry, Ello). While their stats may be impressive, it doesn't mean that Facebook is as good as it can be.Complaints about messy timelines, useless features, and an abundance of ads are just a few of the annoyances about the service. Luckily, if you use the Google Chrome browser, there are extensions that can make Facebook better than ever before, and here are our 6 favorite ones. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

#1: Use Facebook Without Going to FacebookWhile it isn't official, Facebook for Chrome is a must-have extension. Instead of going to Facebook's website, you can receive notifications, post status updates and links, comment, and more through a popup window accessible from anywhere in your browser.Just tap on the Facebook icon in the toolbar to the right of the address bar (aka omnibox). A small window will appear, where you can scroll through your timeline, as well as search for friends and like and comment on posts. On the right side of the popup window, you'll see several other icons which you can use to view your News Feed, check out photos, see your notifications, go through your messages, and even post an update.

#2: Send Facebook Messages from ChromeIf Facebook Messenger is the aspect of the social media site that you use the most, then this extension of the same name might be better catered to your needs.Click on the toolbar icon and a small window will appear, where you can go through your Facebook messages. Functionality is the same as is through the official website—you can send emojis and stickers, attach photos, and of course, send messages. You can also toggle notifications and sounds, as well as change the size of the messenger window from small to large, all by right-clicking on the icon and going to "Options."

#3: Customize the Crap Out of FacebookFacebook's aesthetics are nothing to write home about, but with Social Fixer, you can go nuts tricking out the interface with features that you probably never knew you wanted.Everything from News Feed tabs to advanced feed filters and themes make it so that you have a brand new Facebook experience with new and extremely useful features. You can get image previews (by hovering your mouse over a picture) and force the News Feed to switch to "Recent Stories First." You can even do things like change the font size, force the Enter key to insert a line break, show GIFs as animated, hide and lock headers and menus, and much, much more. Check out Social Fixer's website to see more of the features available.

#4: Hover Over Images to Enlarge ThemSimilar to the image preview feature in Social Fixer, Photo Zoom for Facebook (which we've covered before) allows you to hover over an image and get a larger image preview that hovers over Facebook and follows your cursor. But unlike Social Fixer, Photo Zoom's image preview feature works not only with posted pictures, but also profile images, and even links that have pictures—basically, anything with a picture (even ads).

#5: Block Facebook Ads & Other AnnoyancesWhile Facebook attempts to keep ads to a minimum, they're still pretty annoying. Facebook Customizer (by Adblock Plus) can easily block all of the advertisements from the side of your Facebook feed. Below you can see a comparison of Facebook with ads (left) and with the extension enabled (right). Much cleaner right? Facebook Customizer also gives you the option to remove some of Facebook's other annoyances, such as "Music Pages You May Like," "Suggest Friends," "Nearby Places," and 18 other items you can remove from your timeline. Good riddance.

#6: Stop Facebook from Tracking YouWhen you visit any of the more than 13 million websites that work with Facebook Connect—the service that allows you to log into sites using your Facebook credentials—Facebook gets notified and then tracks this information. Facebook Disconnect (which has been around for awhile) allows you to continue using Facebook, but blocks this information from getting to Facebook from third-party sites. Just install the extension and you're ready to go—no more stalking on Facebook's behalf.
The Best of the RestThere are hundreds of extensions that revolve around Facebook in the Chrome Web Store, although most aren't polished apps or kept up-to-date. So while many are not up-to-snuff, there are definitely a few that deserve an honorable mention.Facebook Unseen: prevents users from seeing if you've read their messages (Android alternative) Classic for Facebook: makes Facebook simple again by reverting back to an older layout Photon: edit photos before you upload them Delete All Messages: adds an action button to delete all messages at once Facebook Auto Poke: automatically sends a poke back to anyone who poked you Facebook Undo: gives you 5 seconds to think about what you're posting Unsticker Me: removes all stickers from comments on your News Feed or Timeline Faces.im: Adds chat-head bubbles for new conversations to the right side of the browser Are there any other Chrome extensions for Facebook that you use? Let us know in the comments below.

How To: Not Getting the Jelly Bean Update Yet? Here's How to Flash Your Samsung Galaxy S III to Android 4.1.1

How To: Not Getting the Jelly Bean Update Yet? Here's How to Flash Your Samsung Galaxy S III to Android 4.1.1

The newest firmware update for Android, Jelly Bean 4.1.1, has been out for a while now, but not every device has gotten it yet (some never will). One popular device that has recently gotten it is the Samsung Galaxy S III, only they'll be pushing the update out overseas during the next couple weeks, with the UK already seeing Jelly Bean from the cellular provider Three (if you're on Three, see how to update your device here). Unfortunately, stateside users will have to wait a bit longer. Image via theandroidsoul.com There have been multiple reports stating that US users may not receive the update until early next year. Needless to say, this is a major annoyance to those that have been waiting for this update since the S III's release. The new update includes a bunch of new features and enhancements, which you can see on Android' website. For those Android fans that simply cannot wait for the update to be released at their location, there is a way that you can get the firmware right now. WARNING: This method is very risky and should be done by those in an international market (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Sweden, UK) or those that have an international version of the Galaxy S III (GT-I9300). You are advised to back up your device before.Your S3 must be rooted in order for this method to work. First, you want to download the program ODIN, which allows you to flash a phone with the new firmware. Then you will download this zipped ROM and extract the files. Now, open ODIN, click PDA and download the ROM you just unzipped. It should look like this: Image via pocket-lint.com Now you will need to reboot your device and put it into download mode. Here's a video that explains how it's done: Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Once your phone is in download mode, ODIN should then begin to start downloading the files for the new firmware. Cross your fingers, because this is the last stage. View below for a step-by-step video of this entire process. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
If you do this, when Jelly Bean 4.1.2 comes out, you should be able to update to it just fine. New to rooting? Get more details on this hack here (or here). For those of you who don't have the international model, you're just going to have to wait for now... at least for a leaked ROM of the US version.

How To: Black Dot Character Crashing Messages? Try These Fixes on Your iPhone

How To: Black Dot Character Crashing Messages? Try These Fixes on Your iPhone

There are some nasty iOS bugs out there, many determined to crash the Messages app. For example, in February 2018, we saw a Telugu character render the iPhone messaging app totally useless. While that bug has been fixed, the nightmare continues in a new bug, aptly dubbed the "Black Dot."The Black Dot bug appears to have originated in WhatsApp on Android, so this isn't just an iOS issue. Users would receive the message seen below indicating they should tap the dot. If they did, their phone would then freeze up. Now, the bug has spread to iOS 11.3 and 11.4, but instead of freezing iPhones, it, of course, locks users out of their Messages apps.Don't Miss: Indian (Telugu) Character Crashing Apple Messages? Try This According to Apple's speech engine, this translates to: "less than, medium black circle, greater than, space, backhand index finger with light skin tone pointing left."
Why Is This Happening? In order to understand why a simple black dot can cause so much chaos, you need to know that this is no ordinary symbol. The black dot here is actually made up of thousands of hidden Unicode characters, designed to push your iPhone's CPU beyond its limits. Because your iPhone cannot process this enormous string of characters, your Messages app crashes and becomes "impossible" to reopen. It seems like the sheer number of invisible characters just causes the text processing engine to spin near indefinitely on processing the string, which then ultimately locks up the wider OS and apps.
— Benjamin Mayo/9to5MacIt also didn't help that popular YouTuber EverythingApplePro published a video teaching people how to spread the bug to their friends. While he insists that his viewers share the remedy for the glitch with their victims, it's a bit out of his hands. So, if you're affected by the dot, is all hope lost? Not at all. There are a few ways you can undo the damage and restore balance to your iPhone.
Method 1: Update to iOS 11.4While the official build of iOS is currently on 11.3.1, Apple has found a fix for the Black Dot bug for its beta testers — iOS 11.4 beta 6 introduced a fix for the bug, which will presumably find its way to the official 11.4 release in coming weeks. If you can't wait that long to escape the Black Dot bug, considering joining the beta for iOS 11.4. You can find out more about it in our guide below, which can walk you through downloading the latest beta version to your iPhone today.More Info: How to Download the Latest iOS 11 Beta to Your iPhone Right Now

Method 2: Use SiriYour Messages app will never respring on its own because it's trying to open the message containing the black dot. Instead, you'll need to force that message out of the way by adding more messages to the thread in question.Of course, you could have your friend text you, but if they sent you this message in the first place, they probably aren't too keen on helping you out of your situation.Instead, use Siri. First, force-close the app. Then, use Siri to send a message or a series of messages to the contact that sent you the black dot. The goal here is to push the dot out of view, so you can safely reenter Messages without triggering the issue again.Once you've sent your message, open Messages. If it works, get over to the main "Messages" page, then immediately delete the thread containing the dot.

Method 3: Use 3D Touch to Enter a Different ThreadIf this first method doesn't work for you, try this: 3D Touch allows you to enter one of three of your most recent threads in Messages. Presuming at least one of these threads doesn't contain the malicious black dot, you can simply select it to launch yourself back into Messages. To start, force-close Messages again, just to be safe. Next, use 3D Touch to enter a non-dot thread. Once there, simply go back one page to the main "Messages" screen, then delete the thread with the black dot.
Method 4: Delete It from Another Device with Messages on iCloudMessages on iCloud is currently only available as part of the iOS 11.4 beta. However, if you have the feature set up, you can use it to delete the black dot message from one of your other connected devices. Unfortunately, that other device needs to be running the latest beta in order for Messages on iCloud to work, so if you want to set it up, make sure your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is on the beta.More Info: How to Sync All Your Messages With iCloud on iOS 11.4 If both of your devices are set up with Messages on iCloud, simply find the thread on your other device and delete it quickly. Be careful not to tap or click on the black dot, as well — the bug wrecks just as much havoc on an iPad as it does an iPhone, and is also known to have severely affected the memory of Macs.Don't Miss: 5 Cool New Features in iOS 11.4 for iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Customize or Remove the Home Screen Search Bar in the Google Now Launcher

How To: Customize or Remove the Home Screen Search Bar in the Google Now Launcher
With the release of the Nexus 5 back in 2013 came the Google Now Launcher, which has become the go-to choice for many Android users, especially those who prefer the Nexus line. With its integration of the Google Now page and the always-listening hotword detection, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more complete and useful launcher.Yet as advantageous as it is, Google seems to lay some strict rules when it comes to customizing their launcher, the simplest of which being the ability to opt out of the persistent Google Search widget, a permanent fixture on every home screen page.In the past, we've given you a broad overview of the Xposed GEL Settings mod and how you can use it to add swipe gestures to the launcher, but today I'll be going over the various search bar options it has, including removing the bar completely. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Get Your Device ReadyThis process will indeed work for Android 5.0 Lollipop. With that being said, you will also need to be rooted. If you're unsure on how to root, then just take a look at our easy-to-follow Android root guide. After rooting your device, be sure to install the Xposed Framework so that the application we're installing can work. For those of you running Lollipop, check out the Xposed Framework guide for Lollipop.

Step 2: Install Xposed GEL SettingsHead over to the Google Play Store to install Xposed GEL Settings, then make sure to properly activate the module.

Step 3: Customize Your Search BarUpon opening the application, access the side menu panel and select "Google Search Bar" from the various options. From within these settings, you can remove the search bar altogether, make it visible only on the main home page, or strictly on the Google Now page if you choose to do so. If you like the bar and just want to add some character to it, try applying a custom color. You can make it any color you want and also adjust the transparency level. I'd also suggest trying the full-on transparent look, so it's less conspicuous on your display while still being able to utilize the feature. Because I refuse to claim defeat and install a third-party launcher with customization options, GEL Settings is definitely a godsend. Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments below.Make sure to follow Android Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Android tips.

How To: Gift iOS Apps, Games, Movies, Music, Books & TV Shows to iPhone Users
One of the best gifts that someone with an iPhone can receive is a paid app, hot new movie, bestselling album, gift card, or anything else in iTunes, Books, or the App Store that costs money. Even if it's a small $0.99 game that you heard a friend talking about, a gesture like this can go a long way. Gifting apps and media is now easier than ever, even if you don't have an iOS device yourself. If you've never gifted an app, game, movie, book, audiobook, song, album, gift card, or the like before, it's not very obvious how you would go about doing so from an iPhone or iPad. It's been pretty much the same process ever since iOS 6, but it's still not super clear by any means. For those of you wanting to send iOS-related gifts to your friends and family but don't have an iOS device yourself, you can still do so from any computer.

Option 1. Gift Apps, Games & Media from Your iPhone or iPadThe process for gifting paid apps and games in the iOS App Store; music, movies, TV shows, books, audiobooks, and tones in iTunes; and books and audiobooks in Books (previously called iBooks) is relatively the same. Simply search for the app, game, or media you want to give someone, then select it to view its details page.Next, if you're in the App Store, just tap the ellipsis (•••) icon next to the price tag. If you're in iTunes or Books, tap the share icon. This will bring up the menu that lets you gift the title. In the App Store, just tap "Gift App," and in iTunes or Books, tap "Gift" from the bottom row of actions. After tapping "Gift App" or "Gift," you'll be taken to the Send Gift screen. Here, you'll be asked the email address of the person you're sending the app or media. You can even type in a short message to them, too. You can also select a future date so, which is helpful if you want to plan ahead to make sure it's sent on somebody's birthday or another special date. To do that, just tap "Today" to change the date.Don't Miss: How to Get Your Money Back from Apple for Apps & Media When ready, hit "Next" in the top right to select your gift's theme. Currently, there are ones with the Apple logo, a cake, balloons, and gift boxes. This doesn't change the way you gift the app or anything, so just choose whichever one you think fits the occasion best, then tap "Next" again. Now, confirm the information is correct, then hit "Buy" in the top right. Confirm by hitting "Buy Now" if that pops up. You'll need to enter your password to confirm the purchase. Unfortunately, Touch ID and Face ID don't seem to work when buying gifts, at least, not for us. Also, you don't get to use Apple Pay and the amount is taken from whatever debit or credit card you have on file with iTunes.

Option 2: Gift Apple Pay Cash from Your iPhone or iPadIf you don't know if they'll like the app or media you choose, sometimes it's best to just give them cash so they can buy the item themselves. As long as you have Apple Pay Cash set up on your iPhone, it's super simple to do. Just keep in mind they can technically use this cash for anything, not just digital goods. We won't get into the nitty-gritty of it right here, but you can essentially send anyone with an iOS device or Mac some Apple Pay Cash from within the Messages app, from the Contacts or Phone app, and even using Siri. You can even personalize the message with what app or media item you want them to get or just add a link to it (you can get the link from the share options in the store apps above).More Info: How to Pay Family & Friends Apply Pay Cash in Messages

Option 3. Send Gift Cards from Your iPhone or iPadIf you don't have Apple Pay Cash set up, you can still send them money that they can use in the App Store, iTunes, or Books in the form of a digital gift card. Unlike with Apple Pay Cash, you know they will at least be using the money you send to buy stuff from Apple's digital shops. In the App Store, just tap on your profile picture at the top, then hit "Send Gift Card by Email." For the iTunes and Books apps, scroll all the way to the bottom of a "Featured" page, then tap "Send Gift." Just like in Option 3 above, fill in the email address and a message to the recipient. You can choose one of the amounts shown ($25, $50, or $100), but you can also enter a custom amount as long as it's between $15 and $200. Next, choose a theme and continue on to the payment. Alternatively, you can purchase email-friendly gift cards from third-party retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart, from either your web browser or the respective shopping apps.

Option 4. Gift Media from iTunes/Books on Your ComputerKeep in mind that only people with Macs will be able to use Books (as there isn't a Windows app for it). The process for gifting on both iTunes and Books, however, is the same regardless.First, open up either iTunes or Books. Books will bring you right to the store, where you can click on a book or search for one. On iTunes, use the menu at the top to find what section you're looking for, be it music, movies, TV shows, or audiobooks. Once you find whatever you want to gift, click on it. On its store page, you'll see a button under the preview image that says "$[price] Buy." Click on the downward-facing arrow on the right side, and then click "Gift this [media]." From there, you'll log in with your Apple ID (if you haven't already), then fill out the email, message, and choose the date on the popup. Click on "Next" to finish up and pay.

Option 5. Send Gift Cards from an Android DeviceTo gift from an Android phone or computer without iTunes, visit Apple's online store to gift an iTunes gift card. First, select a card design (there are more than the first three if you hit the right arrow), then enter a gift amount to put on the card. Finally, compose your email to the recipient. This is what they'll see when they receive the card. (It's a lot easier to do this from a computer.) After you enter that information in, select "Add to Bag" in the top-right corner. Scroll to the bottom of the next page, and hit "Check Out." If you have an Apple ID, this is where you'll enter it to finish checking out. If not, "Continue as Guest" and enter your credit card info to complete the purchase. Alternatively, you can purchase email-friendly gift cards from third-party retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart, from either your web browser or the respective shopping apps.Buy App Store & iTunes Gift Cards: Amazon | Apple | Best Buy | WalmartNow you're well-equipped to send apps and other media to your friends. Obviously, this works best if you have an iOS device yourself, but gifting on an Android phone or computer is also super easy.Follow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

To tin the shield, start towards the end: Press the iron to the wire, add solder. The shield is thicker, so it will take a bit longer for it to heat up and for the solder to flow into the wire. But not much longer - only another second or two at most (compared to the time it took to do the center conductor).

To remove the solder, you will need to use a de-soldering tool, like the de-soldering braid mentioned before. There are other de-soldering tools like a "sucker" that sucks up heated solder by means of air pressure, but that method is not covered here. To use a de-soldering braid, first lay the braid on top of the joint to be removed.

News: Huawei Mate 20 Pro Finally, a Phone with Almost No Compromises

News: Huawei Mate 20 Pro Finally, a Phone with Almost No Compromises
In this jam-packed October, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has flown under the radar in the US. Due to Huawei's lack of presence in the States, many are unfamiliar with the second largest OEM in the world. Huawei has continuously put out amazing mobile devices, and this year they released a phone that's nearly perfect on paper. The Mate series has always had strong specs, which started with the introduction of the latest SoC, Kirin. However, it appears with the Mate 20, Huawei wanted to make a phone without compromise. The result is a phone that has all the top specs in 2018. Except for the ASUS ROG Phone, I don't believe there will be a better spec sheet this year, which will lead to fantastic performance and an excellent phone.Jump to a section: Important Dates | Storage Capacity | Price | Body | Basics | Display | Performance | Battery | Front Camera | Rear Camera | Audio | Sensors | Connectivity | Security | Software | Box Includes
Important DatesWe don't know any timelines for the US market at this time; Huawei only announced availability for other markets. We've reached out to Huawei for more information and will update this article when we find out.Release date: US date currently unknown Preorder date: US date currently unknown Announced: Oct. 16, 2018
Storage CapacityThe Huawei Mate 20 Pro will come in two variants, one containing 128 GB of built-in storage and the other coming with 256 GB. All internal storage use the UFS 2.1 specification for fast read and write speeds. Both versions support expandable storage via Nano Memory cards.Yes, you read that right — the Mate 20 Pro uses Huawei's newly invented Nano Memory cards, which are smaller than microSD by 45% and the same size as Nano-SIM cards. As a result, the SIM tray is smaller, as each tray can be stacked on each other because of the uniform size of the expandable storage and SIM cards. At launch, these memory cards will come in capacities up to 256 GB of storage.Storage available: 128 GB or 256 GB Expanded storage: Nano Memory card up to 256 GB

PriceJust like the preorder and release dates, we don't know the pricing for US users at this time since Huawei only announced availability for other markets. We've reached out to Huawei for more information and will update this article when we find out. Image via Huawei
BodyTo support wireless charging, the back cover is now glass. It uses Corning's Gorilla Glass to protect both the display and back cover, but Huawei didn't specify which version they were using. The frame is aluminum, providing adequate protection against drops. However, aluminum is more prone to scratches, so you don't want to keep in your purse or in the same pockets as your keys.As for colors, there are four: Midnight Blue, Black, Emerald Green, and Twilight. Midnight Blue and Emerald Green are a bit different than the other two colors, as they use the Hyper Optical Patterns glitter. This finish reduces fingerprint smudges and provides non-slip texture over standard glass.Frame: aluminum Finish: midnight blue, black, emerald green, twilight
BasicsIts dimensions are similar to Google's Pixel 3 XL, sharing a similar height and width. However, it is much thicker than the Pixel 3 XL thanks in part to the wireless charging and the 4,000 mAh battery. Unlike last year, it has the maximum rating of IP68. This means it's dust-proof and resistant to water as deep as two meters for up to 30 minutes. As for carriers, while we wait for official support, based on its LTE Bands, it will work on AT&T and T-Mobile.Height: 6.21 inches Width: 2.85 inches Depth: 0.34 inches Weight: 6.67 ounces Dust/water resistance: IP68 under IEC standard 60529 Supported carriers: T-Mobile & AT&T

DisplayThe Mate 20 Pro has a 6.39-inch OLED display with a resolution of 3120 x 1440, resulting in an impressive 538 pixels per inch. It has a screen-to-body ratio of 86.9%, beating out the iPhone XS Max, which was achieved thanks to a smaller display notch and almost half the size of the side bezels. Huawei also opted for curved glass on each side (similar to Samsung) so that it's more comfortable to hold in your hand.Screen size: 6.39 inches Screen resolution: 3120 x 1440 pixels Pixel density: 538 ppi Screen type: AMOLED HDR Display Notch: yes Screen-to-body ratio: 86.9 percent Aspect ratio: 19:5.9 Minimum brightness: Currently unknown Maximum brightness: Currently unknown Refresh rate: 60 Hz Color temperature: Currently unknown Image by MKBHD/YouTube

PerformanceWith every Mate series comes the consumer's first access to the latest Kirin SoC, and this year's no different. Included in the Mate 20 Pro is the latest SoC from the company, the Kirin 980. Although second to be released, this is the first announced SoC to use the TSMC 7 nm manufacturing process (Apple was first to market with the Apple A12 Bionic). Thanks to this smaller process, the SoC has improved by 20% overall with a 40% improvement in power efficiency. The Kirin 980 is a powerhouse, offering performance matching or exceeding the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. Huawei can achieve this using the new Cortex-A76 cores, which are 75% more powerful than the previous generation (the Snapdragon 845 uses custom cores based on Cortex-A75) and more power efficient, offering a 58% improvement. These cores are arranged in a three-level structure, with two Cortex-A76 cores at a higher frequency, two Cortex-A76 cores at a slightly lower frequency, plus four "little" Cortex-A55 cores. This arrangement is different from the industry norm, which uses a big.LITTLE design. However, Huawei feels this arrangement can better handle different situations leading to a smoother experience. Image via Huawei As for mobile games, the Kirin 980 is paired with a Mali-G76 GPU, a huge leap in performance from the previous generation. The Mali-G76 has 46% greater graphics processing power than the previous generation while improving the power efficiency by 178%. The Kirin 970 was no slouch when it came to gaming, so one can only imagine how good Kirin 980 will be at games like PUBG and Fortnite. And just like last year's Kirin 970, Huawei is heavily invested in AI. The Kirin 980 doubles up on last year's Kirin 970 and now has two NPUs to handle machine learning processing. And with the extra help, AI enhancements will get faster on a wide variety of operations, from photography to live translating. The Kirin 980 will have the Cat. 21 modem, a first for smartphones. With this modem, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is capable of a theoretical maximum download speed of 1.7 Gbps. That is 500 Mbps higher than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845's modem. Huawei also included a dual-band GPS position technology. By using L1 and L5, GPS tracking is more accurate, especially in areas with a lot of obstructions such as tunnels and elevators.Memory: 6 GB or 8 GB RAM Processor: Kirin 980 Chip size: 7 nanometer Coprocessor: Dual NPU CPU frequency: 2.6 GHz + 1.92 GHz + 1.8 GHz CPU cores: 2 x Cortex A76 + 2 x Cortex A76 + 4 x Cortex A55 GPU: Mali-G76 GPU cores: 20 cores

BatteryBoth the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will support Huawei's new fast-charging technology. Similar to Oppo's Super VOOC, SuperCharge 2.0 can charge from 0–70% battery capacity in 30 minutes. That speed is based on the Mate 20 Pro and its 4,200 mAh battery. Not only will the Huawei Mate 20 Pro have one of the biggest batteries for a flagship smartphone, but it will also have the fastest charging times as well. And, to relieve any worry, it is certified by TUV Rheinland to be safe to use. For our wireless charging fans, Huawei has finally heard you. Now that wireless charging has gotten faster, Huawei will finally include the technology in their Mate series. The Mate 20 Pro supports 15-watt wireless charging. For context, Quick Charge 3.0's max power is 18 watts, so this will deliver recharge times similar to older fast-charging technology. What's even better is that with its large battery, the Mate 20 Pro can act as a power bank for other phones. By enabling the toggle "Reverse Wireless Charging," you can place your other wireless devices (such as your friend's iPhone XS Max) to charge their device wirelessly as if your Mate 20 Pro's back cover was a wireless charging mat.Battery: rechargeable lithium-ion Capacity: 4,200 mAh Wired charging: SuperCharge 2.0 at 40 W max Wireless charging: Wireless Quick Charge at 15 W max Image by MKBHD/YouTube

Rear CameraWe here in the US were denied the very first triple rear camera when Huawei first introduced the world to the P20 Pro. Fortunately, we will be getting Huawei's second iteration with the Mate 20 Pro, and this layout is different than their first attempt. Image by MrMobile/YouTube Known as the Matrix system, the Mate 20 Pro uses three cameras for even better photography performance. The primary sensor is a 40 MP wide-angle lens with ƒ/1.8 aperture. This lens has a focal length of 27 mm. The second lens is a 20 MP ultrawide-angle lens with an aperture of ƒ/2.2 and focal length of 16 mm. This is one of the first Huawei phones with an ultrawide lens, which should really improve photography as you no longer need to ask your friends to squeeze into the photo. Finally, there is an 8 MP telephoto lens with a focal length of 80 mm (or 3x optical zoom) and an aperture of ƒ/2.4.Using the various focal lengths, Huawei's dual NPUs can intelligently mix the data to add additional zoom without too much loss to detail. The result is a Hybrid Zoom of 5x which, while not as good as optical, is significantly better than digital zoom (which maxes out at 10x). The 3x optical zoom also helps with macro shots. The Mate 20 Pro can capture details as close as 2.5 cm allowing you to capture the small world below you.The cameras are also enhanced by Light Fusion (a technology previously included in the P20 Pro), which combines the data of four adjacent pixels of the same color in one pixel. These "super pixels" measure at 2 µm, which is not only huge for smartphones but can add more detail that is also less grainy, noisy, and with better contrast. This allowed the P20 Pro to take amazing low-light photos and will do the same for the Mate 20 Pro.The Mate 20 Pro uses a larger sensor than the iPhone XS Max and Galaxy Note 9, which allows it to capture even more light for better photos. Thanks to the sensor, it is able to achieve of light sensitivity 16x of the Galaxy Note 9 and iPhone XS Max. During the event, Huawei showed a few photos taken in low light without flash and the images were well-lit and crisp. Image by Huawei Mobile UK/YouTube All photos are enhanced using the new ISP and analyzed by the dual-NPU for first improvements. With the Dual NPU, Huawei is also bringing Super HDR technology for better images. Similar to the Pixel 3 and iPhone XS Max, in this mode, the Mate 20 Pro takes up to 10 images of various exposures and combines them into one well-balanced photo in RAW format. Huawei is also bringing back the camera optimization based on object and scene recognition from last year's Mate 10 lineup so you can take a photo faster without having to mess around with settings. The NPUs also improved video capture. Using the dual NPUs, the Mate 20 Pro can do real-time processing to apply effects (such as those used in movies) during the actual capturing of the video rather than in post-production. Using face recognition, the rear cameras can also remove any footage of a certain individual from a video. So during those hard breakups, you can still enjoy past videos without having to see your ex.Resolution: 40 MP + 20 MP + 8 MP Aperture: ƒ/1.8 (wide-angle) + ƒ/2.2 (ultrawide-angle) + ƒ/2.4 (telephoto) Zoom: 3x optical, 5x hybrid, 10x digital Flash: yes Image stabilization: Huawei AI image stabilization RAW support: yes Lens cover: sapphire Object detection: face, object, scenes Autofocus: laser, phase, and contrast focus Formats: JPEG, RAW
AudioThe Mate 20 series will support stereo speakers. In addition to the bottom-firing speaker, there's a speaker above the small display notch under the grill, and the two will work in unison. What is interesting is that there is no speaker grille on the bottom. Instead, Huawei designed the sound to come out of the USB-C port for a clean looker and easier waterproofing. The speakers will support Dolby Atmos and SLS for a more immersive sound.3.5 mm headphone jack: no Stereo speakers: yes
SensorsNot only does the Huawei Mate 20 Pro have all the typical sensors, it also has few additional goodies as well. For biometrics, since it supports 3D Face Unlock, it has an infrared sensor, and a laser sensor to create a 3D map of your face. And since Huawei knew this wasn't for everyone, it also has an in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock your device. There is also a dual-band GPS for better accuracy.Sensors: gravity sensor, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, gyroscope, compass, in-display fingerprint sensor, Hall sensor, laser sensor, Barometer, infrared sensor, color temperature sensor, GPS (L1 + L5 dual band) / AGPS / Glonass / BeiDou / Galileo (E1 + E5a dual band) / QZSS (L1 + L5 dual band), IR blaster
ConnectivityNFC Read Write mode / Peer to Peer mode / Card Emulation mode (payment by SIM card, or HCE) is supported. Unlike last year's Kirin 970, Huawei's new SoC supports Bluetooth 5. And since it runs Android 9.0 Pie, it supports all the latest audio codecs including aptX HD and Sony's LDAC.Wi-Fi: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (wave2), 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Bluetooth: 5 NFC: yes Cellular: dual Nano-SIM card tray, Gigabit-class LTE with 4x4 MIMO and LAA Port: Type-C, USB 3.1 GEN1 LYA-L29:Primary SIM card:4G LTE TDD: B34 / B38 / B39 / B40 4G LTE FDD: B1 / B2 / B3 / B4 / B5 / B6 / B7 / B8 / B9 / B12 / B17 / B18 / B19 / B20 / B26 / B28 / B32 3G WCDMA: B1 / B2 / B4 / B5 / B6 (Japan) / B8 / B19 (Japan); 3G TD-SCDMA: B34 / B39 2G GSM: B2 / B3 / B5 / B8 (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz) Secondary SIM card:4G LTE TDD: B34 / B38 / B39 / B40 4G LTE FDD: B1 / B2 / B3 / B4 / B5 / B6 / B7 / B8 / B9 / B12 / B17 / B18 / B19 / B20 / B26 / B28 3G WCDMA: B1 / B2 / B4 / B5 / B6 / B8 / B19 2G GSM: B2 / B3 / B5 / B8 (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz) LYA-L09:4G LTE TDD: B34 / B38 / B39 / B40 4G LTE FDD: B1 / B2 / B3 / B4 / B5 / B6 / B7 / B8 / B9 / B12 / B17 / B18 / B19 / B20 / B26 / B28 / B32 3G WCDMA: B1 / B2 / B4 / B5 / B6 (Japan) / B8 / B19 (Japan); 3G TD-SCDMA: B34 / B39 2G GSM: B2 / B3 / B5 / B8 (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz)

SecurityHuawei has finally brought its Point Cloud Depth Camera (aka its version of Apple's Face ID) to the masses with the Mate 20 Pro. Unlike so many Android phones with large notches, the Mate 20 Pro actually has a justifiable reason for including the display cutout.Just like Apple's Face ID, it uses a laser projector to create a cloud of points (see how they got the name) to make a 3D mapping of your face. This laser projector can create these points faster than Apple's Face ID, allowing you to unlock your phone in a mere 0.6s. It is also capable of delivering 10x more dots for a more detailed mapping of objects. This is backed up by an infrared camera for times when you are in low light situations. The result is one of the first facial unlock phones to hit Android and the first to make use of Android 9.0 Pie's new BiometricPrompt. Image via Huawei Also, similar to Apple, Huawei includes their version of Animoji for fun communication with friends. The Mate 20 Pro can also scan 3D objects and recreate them using augmented reality. Using Google's ARCore, these small objects can be reconstructed turning them into interactive objects such as your child's favorite toy. Once scanned, you can control their movement and have them perform small gestures such as kung-fu and jumping. You can even take a picture, a video, and even live stream with the 3D object while interacting with it.However, this technology is more than just fun, it is also secure. The Mate 20 Pro's 3D Face Unlock can be used to make Google Pay purchases, including apps and movies. Huawei also included a few new security tools that leverage the security of the 3D Face Unlock to authenticate new features such as App Locker, Private Space, and File Cabinet. Even selfies are better, thanks to the new sensors.Biometrics: 3D Face Unlock and in-display fingerprint scanner While the Mate 20 Pro isn't the first phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner, it is the first to use the new ultrasonic variant. With this technology, the Mate 20 Pro's fingerprint scanner is much faster than phones which launched previously (and even the new OnePlus 6T which releases afterward) which use the optical in-display fingerprint scanner. This technology is much more accurate than optical and can operate in thicker displays. Image by MrMobile/YouTube Huawei has also optimized the technology using their own algorithms to improve speed further. Huawei really believes in this technology, because unlike the regular Mate 20, there is no physical fingerprint scanner, so you are forced to rely on this or Huawei's Face ID.
SoftwareThis is the first Huawei phone to launch with Android 9.0 Pie and will be the 9th phone in the US to run this version of Android. As with previous iterations of the phone, the Mate 20 Pro will launch with EMUI, Huawei's skin. EMUI 9.0 will include the new Android Pie gesture controls and is improved all around. There are a number of changes thanks to Android Pie which you learn more about using the link below.Skin: EMUI 9.0 OS: Android 9.0 Pie Don't Miss: 44 New Features & Changes in Android Pie 9.0 Supports mp3, mp4, 3gp, ogg, amr, aac, flac, wav, midi for audio, 3gp, mp4 for video.

With the exception of EMUI and the display notch, I can't see what someone could complain about regarding this phone. It has a great screen, battery, cameras, wireless charging, and so much more. While Huawei isn't a household name in the US, they seem determined to change that, and the Mate 20 Pro is a great start.Don't Miss: The US Government's Spat with Huawei Is Depriving Americans of a Wonderful PhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Stop Facebook's Annoying Marketplace Notifications

While many of Facebook's tools are well received as they enhance the experience, one which is often complained about is the Marketplace. The Craigslist-like feature which offers a way to facilitate transactions between users can be a little overbearing with its alerts. However, you can change that.Depending on your smartphone's operating system, there are one or two ways in which you can manage these notifications. Both methods allow you either scale them down or stop them altogether, depending on useful the Marketplace is to you.

Method 1: Change Settings Within the App (iOS or Android)For most users, start by tapping the hamburger icon (three lines) in the bottom-right corner (iPhone) or top-right corner (Android). From there, expand the "Settings & Privacy," menu, then select "Settings" and choose "Notifications Settings" on the next page. Now, select "Marketplace" to view the notifications settings for Marketplace. You can prevent notifications for being received by a certain device (such as text messages or push notifications on your phone), or you can disable all notifications by disabling "Allow Notifications on Facebook." Either way, disable one or all the toggles, and you should no longer receive any more notifications.

Method 2: Use Notification Channels (Android)On Android devices running Android 8.0 Oreo or newer, you can take advantage of Notification Channels. With this feature, you can manage different categories of notifications for specific apps by changing how they appear on your device and whether they appear at all.To access the Notification Channels for Facebook, open Settings and select "Apps" or "Apps & Notifications." Choose Facebook from the list of apps, then select "Notifications." From here, you will see a list of the different categories of alerts created by the Facebook app. When you locate Marketplace in this list, you have two options. You can select the text to customize how the announcement appears, with options such as stopping it from popping up on the screen or just turning off the alert sound. The second option is to select the toggle next to Marketplace to disable notifications altogether. How To: Access the Notes App Directly from the Lock Screen in iOS 11

How To: Access the Notes App Directly from the Lock Screen in iOS 11
All to often, many of us are struck with a brilliant idea out of nowhere, only to forget about it moments later thanks to the distractions of daily life. Sometimes, the actual process of jotting these ideas down in our iPhones can be a holdup, as the idea we want to record fades from memory before we can even unlock our devices and open Notes to get started.Fortunately, Apple has come up with a simple solution that should help put an end to this issue — with the arrival of iOS 11, you can now instantly access Notes straight from your iPhone's lock screen. This new feature is guaranteed to save time and help you more accurately transcribe ideas from memory to paper, so to speak.
Step 1: Add a Notes Shortcut to Your Control CenterBefore getting started, make sure to have a shortcut available for the Notes App in the Control Center if you haven't done so already. The process is straight forward, and basically involves going into Settings –> Control Center –> Customize Controls, then adding the control for the Notes app. If you'd like a more detailed walkthrough, however, just head to the link below.Don't Miss: How to Add Custom Toggles to the New Control Center in iOS 11

Step 2: Find the Notes Lock Screen SettingTo enable quick access to Notes from the lock screen, open Settings and tap on "Notes." From there, scroll down until you see the Lock screen & Control Center section all the way at the bottom, then choose "Access Notes From Lock Screen."

Step 3: Choose What to Do When Opening Notes from the Lock ScreenOnce inside, you have the option to choose between "Always Create New Note" and "Resume Last Note." Selecting the former lets you instantly create a new note from the lock screen to jot ideas down, while picking the latter gives you further modes to choose from.Tapping on "Created on Lock Screen" lets you create a new note from the lock screen on the go, and gives you the ability to add to it as you please. In this method, you only ever have access to this single note whenever its opened from the Lock Screen, and gives you the option to create or resume a note in timed intervals to keep it secure.Don't Miss: 24 iOS 11 Privacy & Security Settings You Should Check Right NowSelecting "Viewed in Notes App" gives you full access to the Notes App itself, and offers significantly more flexibility in terms of taking notes and checking past ones quickly. Because the whole app can be viewed, this method isn't as secure as the others, and can potentially give other access to private information. Luckily, you can secure it using Touch ID, with various time intervals available between jotting notes to reflect your preferences.

Step 4: Jot Down Notes in an InstantAfter selecting the quick access method for Notes that suits your needs the most, you can exit Settings and go about the rest of your day. Now, you can instantly access Notes without having to unlock your iPhone. Simply swipe up from the bottom of the lock screen to reveal the Control Center, then tap on the Notes icon to jot down ideas and to-dos. Now that you've enabled this feature, do you think you'll be able to capture your next fleeting idea before it fades into oblivion? As always, feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.Don't Miss: 90+ Cool New iOS 11 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Use Your Android's NFC Reader to Turn Your Computer On

How To: Use Your Android's NFC Reader to Turn Your Computer On

NFC, or near-field communications, is a hardware feature that has been built into most Android phones for the last four years. It's essentially a low-power data connection that can be used to initiate a quick command by bringing your device within range of a compatible receiver, be it tap-and-pay with Google Wallet, a file transfer via Android Beam, or a Tasker profile triggered by a specific NFC tag. That last example has quite a few practical implementations. NFC tags can be purchased for less than a dollar each, and when combined with an automation app, can trigger a series of events on your phone and even in the real world. All of this occurs by simply placing your phone within range of the NFC-embedded sticker. With that in mind, the folks over at Rice Or Noodles came up with a rather innovative way to put your phone's NFC reader to good use. After a bit of one-time setup, you'll be able to power on your Windows PC by simply laying your phone down on your desk—I'll outline the process in more detail below.
RequirementsAny NFC-enabled Android device A Windows PC One NFC tag (Available on Amazon and other online retailers)

Step 1: Prepare Your PCFirst and foremost, you'll need to make sure your PC is set to allow for "Wake on LAN" commands. Open your Control Panel, then click "View network status and tasks" to begin. From the next menu, click "Change adapter settings" in the left pane. After that, right-click your primary internet connection, then select "Properties." From here, click the "Configure" button near the top of the windows that appears next. After that, head to the Advanced tab, then make sure the "Wake on magic packet" option is enabled.

Step 2: Write Down Your IP & MAC AddressesWith your computer now set up properly, you'll need to jot down a few numbers in preparation for the setup on your Android device. On your keyboard, hold down the Windows button, then press "R" to open the Run dialog. From here, type "cmd" and click "OK." In the command prompt window, type the following command, then hit enter:ipconfig /all Next, scroll through the list and find the "Ethernet Adapter" section. Write the values for Physical Address, IPV4 Address, and Subnet Mask on a piece of paper.

Step 3: Install Tasker, Trigger, & WoL Wake on Lan WanNext, there are a few apps you'll need to install on your Android device to get this going. First is Tasker, which is a paid app that runs for $2.99. If you'd rather try before you buy, you can use the 7-day trial version from this link, but make sure that "Unknown Sources" is enabled in your phone's settings under "Security" before you launch the installer file. After that, install Trigger, which will be used to read your NFC tag. Finally, install WoL Wake On Lan Wan to execute the command that will power your PC on.

Step 4: Configure WoL Wake on Lan WanFirst, you'll need to configure the app that will actually be waking your PC. Open WoL, then tap "Add New." From here, type "Home" as the name, then fill out the "MAC" and "IP or Domain" fields with the information you copied in Step 2. After that, tick the box next to "Send as Broadcast," then enter your Subnet Mask information. When you're done, tap "Save."

Step 5: Create a Tasker TaskNext, open Tasker and tap the three-dot menu button, then select "Preferences." From here, head to the Misc tab, then tick the box next to "Allow External Access." Back at Tasker's main menu, head to the Task tab, then tap the "+" button at the bottom of the screen. Name this task "Wake" and then press the checkmark icon. From here, tap the "+" button at the bottom of the screen again, then select "Plugin" and "WoL Wake On Lan Wan" from the two menus that follow. After that, tap the pencil-shaped edit button at the top of the screen, then select your "Home" WoL Wake On Lan Wan profile. When you're done with that, go ahead and back all the way out of Tasker.

Step 6: Associate This Task with an NFC Tag Using TriggerAll that's left to do at this point is to tie your work to an NFC tag. Open the Trigger app, then tap the "+" button at the top of the screen two times. From here, select "NFC," then tap "Next" and "Done." After that, tap "Next," then hit the "+" button at the top of the screen. From here, select "Tasker Task," then hit "Next." On the small popup window, tap the magnifying glass icon, then select the "Wake" task you created in Step 5 and hit "Add to Task." Again, hit "Next" and "Done," then grab your NFC tag. From here, you'll be prompted to write this task to your NFC tag. Place your phone within range of the tag to do so, then tap "Done" when the process has completed.
Step 7: Waking Your PC & TroubleshootingWith everything set up, you should now be able to turn your PC on by simply setting your phone down on top of the NFC tag. Note that most phones will have to be unlocked with the display on before the task will trigger. If you're experiencing any issues with the tasks you've created, the first troubleshooting step you should take is to run through your computer's BIOS settings. For most models, BIOS can be accessed by pressing the Delete, F2, F8, or F10 buttons on your keyboard during a reboot. From here, make sure that any "Wake on LAN" options are enabled, then save your changes and try again. In the end, your phone and a simple sticker on your desk now serve as your PC's power button. I have mine stuck to a Qi charger so that I can top off my battery while I'm using my computer. What's your setup like?
